Hi Moms,
I work out of my home and have 3 children, ages 5, 2, and 1. I have always had a part time nanny that came in the afternoon to help with the kids wile I work. Last week, she quit on me without giving the 2 weeks notice that I had requested. :-( I am now looking to find someone new ASAP and have been running into absolutely nothing! I have checked through our church, and have used Sitter City (not sure how comfortable I feel about that, but at least it includes a background check). Does anyone have any recommendations for me? If you have used someone and love her, or if you have gone through a particular method of finding someone reliable, please let me know. I'm needing HELP ASAP! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have a friend who has used a nanny for over a year and loves her. She is currently using her 3 days a week, and the nanny is looking for work on Tuesdays and Fridays. I know you stated you were looking for someone for the afternoons, but if you wanted to rearrange your work schedule to work those two days, send me an email and I'll get you her information.

I tried care.com. Some people who recommend it are actually employed by it and so are recommending it in hopes to increase their chances of employment (as opposed to being moms who use the service).

I tried the service and ended up not using it, but I did talk to several women that were potentially qualified - they just didn't get back to me as quickly as I needed them. (I was also looking for someone ASAP, and none of the ones I deemed qualified were in a huge hurry to start, which is fine, but wasn't fine for me at the time.)

The fee is much less than Sittercity.com's fee... it's $40 for a one-month subscription, so it may be worth trying if you don't find someone directly through another means. I am not re-subscribing after my month is up, though, because it was too tedious a process to try to set up interviews and all that...

Best of luck to you; I know it's difficult to find someone who is qualified and whom you like and trust!

Check places like your local YMCA's and Mother's Day Out Programs. They know which people, past or present, have been great employees. Perhaps their part timers want more hours or have given notice because they want to be a nanny making more money. My daughter so loved this field that she stayed in it after getting her degree. (She doesn't live here now) Do background credit and criminal checks. People with bad credit MAY not be good risks for you. Consider whether or not you have something to offer in exchange (like 1-2 rooms to rent in exchange for part of their wages, or allow a single mom to bring her child along. I don't think I'd do that though if they had a baby though). Naturally, best to check references for people they sat for to see if they abandoned them at the last minute too! Check college campuses, head of Child Development or teaching, to ask for any of their students that they could recommend if they need work. good luck.

I hope you've found someone by now, but in the event you need someone else again in the future, I recommend our site, www.GoNannies.com. Since you mentioned background checks, ALWAYS make sure an in-court county check has been run. Most services DO NOT offer in-court checks and only offer database-only checks which are known to be incomplete and/or inaccurate. We specialize in safety and background checks and are proud to have a reputation of offering the best customer service available. We are locally owned (Flower Mound), and if you ever have any questions, always give us a call. Mamasource members also receive 10% off memberships and packages. See MomPerks.

Also, if you find the process of setting up your own interviews too tedious (as someone else mentioned), we offer a Personal Assistant service where we pre-screen candidates and conduct preliminary interview for you, delivering only candidates that specifically meet your criteria.

Best Wishes!
