Hey moms, just looking for advice and opinions on homemade carrots. I make all my sons food he's 9 months now. I've read several articles on how you're not supposed to prepare carrots, beets spinach and other greens at home because these veggies can contain nitrates. I just want to know what some of you other moms think about this. I can't help but feel like I'm depriving my son of some great veggies at the same time I can't bring myself to buy the jarred stuff.

What can I do next?

Hi A.! I'm sure you already know this, but your name is the same as one of Ariel's sisters in The Little Mermaid. :) So pretty!

Anyways, I admire that you have been able to keep up with a jar-less baby food diet up to this point. I hope it will set your mind at ease to know that most of the major baby food companies (e.g. Gerber and Earth's Best) are certified organic. Adding a couple jars of these strictly regulated fruits and veggies should pose no risk to your darling little boy, and it will almost certainly benefit him by broadening the array of flavors to which he is exposed. Whatever you decide, it sounds like you're doing a great job!

A. you may want to try purchasing organic carrots. That is what I did. And I have a VitaMix Blender that allows me to put the vegetable is raw and blend them to a pulp without any added liquids.

Hi there- I often made my daughter carrots- I just steamed them and added filtered water after cooked in order to puree. As long as you do not use the water that was used to steam/boil/or whatever....that's where all the extra nitrates are. I found this info on wholesomebabyfood.com. Great resource- enjoy!

I have read the same (on carrots only) from several legit sources. You could try the Earth's Best brand. They are supposed to be all natural.

I understand the nitrate issue. I've given the Magic Bullet to several new moms and its great because you can conveniently store it right on your counter and it has small containers that you can use to prepare baby food and just make enough so that you can use it in a day or two, that way you are providing your tot with the freshest ingredients and it is dishwasher safe and easy to clean.....I don't like the jarred stuff either nor do any of the moms I know who now own the Magic Bullet.....Hope this helps! I've seen it sold at Walgreen's, Linen n' Things, Bed Bath n' Beyond to name a few and also online.....It's about $70 but well worth the investment.....I also know Radio Shack has a similiar product but I don't know the cost.....Enjoy!
