My daughter is 2 1/2 and she's sick. I got out of the hospital almost 4 weeks ago from lung surgery so we had to put her in daycare for about 5 weeks ago. She got sick with what we thought was a cold/sinus issue. My husband and I both got sick too. We have been better and then worse the whole 4 weeks and no fevers until this weekend when my husband felt really bad and ran a mild fever. My daughter started running a fever tue on and off and I gave her tylonal and motrin and she would feel better and the fever would break and come back. I gave her tylonal when she got home from daycare at 6:30 last night and she got a steam bath and some honey and went to bed normally at 8:30pm. She woke at 3am burning up and breathing fast. I gave her tylonal and honey and rocked her for 30min and put her back to bed and called the ped exch ange. They counted her breath and she was breathing about 40x's a min which is high. The nurse said I could wait till the peds office to open and take her there instead of the ER but I'm really worried. Has anyone gone through this and what was the illness? She has always been healthy. She has had 1 ear infection at 6months old and a couple of colds/sinus infections but no major health problems. Please help us. Thank you!!

So What Happened?

Thank you for the advise. I was able to ask the doctor better questions because of your help.

My daughter has a cold and a double ear infection. She will be on antibiotics for 10 days which will take her through next week almost so I'm going to send her back to daycare monday and that will be her last week. She was suppose to go the following week so I can be released by my lung doctor but I think it will be better to keep her home instead of having her go back and bring more illnesses home.

Hi C. D. So sorry you are all going through this. As the others have said, Yes go to a dr. so you will feel better. Aside from that, some ideas my pedi always tells us:

1. if she is feverish, a cool bath is best to get the fever down.
2. Dress her in cotton cool clothes.
3. keep her room cool.
4. plenty of liquids and ice cream or a popsicle if she wants it.
5. Fresh air (in the shade or cooler hours).

Good luck. She will be fine soon. Toddlers heal faster than adults.
Hope this helps. Jilly

There are any number of things (bronchitis, pneumonia, RSV) that it could be... just go see the doctor and I'm sure she will be fine after she's treated.

Sounds like you got some good advice. The only thing I'm concerned about was that I heard you're not supposed to give honey to a child until after 3 years old since it is hard for them to break down the natural bacteria in honey. Unless there has been new studies done that say otherwise, I'm pretty sure that I'm accurate. You might want to check with your doctor.

I have gone through this with my son several times starting from when he was a year old. He went to bed fine and then woke up a few hours later with a very high temp and breathing rapidly. This has happened 3 times and we went to the ER each time. His oxygenation levels were down. Each time they gave him Motrin, Tylenol, and antibiotics. Then he would get a few breathing treatments. What it all boils down to is that our pediatrician thinks my son had a mild case of RSV when he was a baby and that has developed into asthma. Each time he went to the ER, they did a chest xray and found one spot on his left lung that seemed to be the issue. With antibiotics, steriods, and lots of breathing treatments, he would get better with a week or 2. He is now on a daily inhaler and has an emergency inhaler. He has improved so much in the past 2 years that his asthma doctor keeps decreasing the amount given from his daily inhaler. We are down to 1 puff a day. My son's issues seem to come on in the spring and fall when the seasons are changing and the weather is screwy and there are a lot of allergens. They are calling it allergic asthma. There is a good chance he'll grow out of it and I really do think we've already seen a lot of improvement. It does lead to many a sleepless nights though when you're worrying if they can breathe or not. Good luck!

Hi C. -
I've been there! I was in the hospital for 7 weeks and my child was young. I had kidney failure. My immune system was so bad, and I got everything brought home from school. I learned about 100pureesssentialoils.com. (This is not a pyramid company. You order as you need.) My child hasn't had pneumonia in over 2 years, and my immune system is much better. I stopped getting sick. I am not a doctor, just a mom who found something that worked for me and my family. Go on line and read about the therapeutic benefits of "lavender oil." (This oil is the safest that I've read about for children). It has to be a high grade oil, and organic...for me. Having said that, you will find something else at the above site called '4 thieves oil.' This has helped me tremendously. Good luck to you and your little one. I have never responded to one of these questions before, but I know how you must feel after having surgery. I've had many.

Sounds like RSV. It is a really bad form of a cold that can develop into pneumonia/bronchitis, etc. and is potentially fatal in preterm babies. Get her checked out at the ER or your doctor ASAP. It is always better to be safe than sorry! (I know from experience. Both of my preemie twins had RSV and both nearly died from it.

My son used to run extremely high fevers for 3-4 days at a time, when he was sick. Not uncommon. The fast breathing is from the fever. A Drs appt is definitely a good idea. As far as the illness goes....could be several things, from upper respiratory infection.....to a virus. Keep her hydrated with Gatorade, keep alternating the tylenol & mortrin (& if she's big for her age, dose by weight, not age). Give her popsicles, or antyhing else cool that will help the fever & keep her hydrated. Hydration with high fevers is one of the most important things, otherwise, a fever is just your body's way of fighting off an infection or virus. BTW - I hope she gets to feeling better soon! (you too!!)

It could be pneumonia, bronchitis, rsv, a really nasty cold, etc. When a cold starts to get better and then seems worse and fever comes back it usually is a sign of a secondary infection like pneumonia (in your case bc it seems to be in her chest), ear infection, sinus infection, etc. If its been more then a week w/ a cold and either of my boys seem like they out of no where got worse we go to the dr. She may need some albuterol to help w/ her breathing for a few days and most likely she needs an antibiotic. My kids just had a nasty cold I had to break out the humidifiers already. I also like the johnson & johnson's vapor bath I give them a nice long bath in it. If she gets like that again you can also take her into a steamy bathroom it will help and sometimes taking them outside into the cooler air can help too. I hope she feels better soon.
