Help My Son Stop the Sippy Cup?

My son just turned 3. I'm trying to get him (2 months now) to drink out of a cup. I bought some small kid appropriate ones that are cute and light. Whenever I serve him liquids in these cups, he asks for his sippy cup. I say, you need to drink out of the big kid cup just like mom and dad. He will try, spill, get mad and just not drink until it is offered in a sippy cup. My gut instinct was to not allow sippy cups and just keep making him practice with a cup. But, when I tried this, he just stole his one year old brothers sippy and snuck drinks from it. Also, being in AZ, I don't want him to not drink. Its like 10 percent humidity. Any ideas besides more practice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So, I like the idea of rotating back and forth. I have to do this with vegetables. You eat those carrots and you can have another black olive. He is stubborn but also loves feeling confident (as does any kid right?) I also kind of agree with the wait it out thing. It is true that there is no need to drink out of a cup. I also just thought up another one. Maybe if he gets his own water from the dispenser on the fridge he will be more apt to try it? About using sippies with straws-that's the kind we already use! He never got the tippy sippy kind. Thanks for the ideas.

The First Years disposable plastic cups with straws are a nice transition. You can find them next to the disposable sippy cups. After a while try using them without the straw.

If it were me, I'd give him more time. We've never made sippy cups a big deal, and they transition on their own. They ALL still use them when we go out and about, or if they want a water in the front room. Any regular cup can only be used at the table. But I wouldn't make it a big deal and just wait until he figures it out himself.

Just give him a cup with a straw.

He can do that by now.

I started by using shot glasses, the ones I have are very thick and safe. My daughter liked them because they are REAL glass, so she was thrilled to be "big" enough to use them. Then I started letting her use a juice glass, it's smaller and again REAL glass. She likes them because Mom uses GLASS not plastic, so she is definitely more interested. She does sometimes like to use a straw in the juice glass, but has gotten a hang of the whole concept quite easily. You have to create interest! Yes, there will be a few spills, but just reassure him, "it's OK, all kids learning spill! Oooops!! :) " Good Luck!

You could switch them both to regular cups and then 'disappear' the sippies. We never did sippy cups with my son and he was able to use a regular cup by 8-9 months.

give him a straw in a regular cup.

yes, keep practiciing too. Don't give in to him! Keep his baby-brother's sippy out of reach from him.

I would transition them both to regular cups at the same time. My daughter never would take a bottle or sippy cup. So, we went right to a cup very early on. Yes, it does take practice and there will be spills!

Hi J.! The challenges of being a parent are never ending huh...LOL What I would try is this; say, "Lets practice like a big boy with a big boy cup first, and when you get done with this drink, you can have a sippy cup." Alternate it and see if that helps build up his confidence with it. :-)

I'm here in Peoria AZ. 110 degrees today....OYE! lol
