My husbands favorite shoes smell. We have tried everything to clean them, but they still smell.
They are by Keene and are used for hiking, cycling and can be worn in the water. My husband wears them everyday to ride to and from his work. They are not inexpensive. The foot portion and soles are rubber like "Crocs", The top is neopreen with canvas... Let me know what you think will work..

Thank you for your time and suggestions.

So What Happened?

Ok, We can and have washed them in the washing machine and then leave them outside to dry many times before, but this weekend we are going to stuff them with newspaper. Thank you all so much for all of your suggestions and time.. I will let you know how it goes.

Not sure if this works on rubber, but for smelly shoes, put newspaper in them over night, it absorbs the smell. At least in tennis shoes. Best wishes.

Contact their customer service line and ask how:

TEL: 866.676.KEEN (5336)
HOURS: Monday – Friday 7am - 5pm (PST)
EMAIL: ____@____.com

You can also find the particular shoe and that might help them provide specific advice: http://www.keenfootwear.com/shoes/men/

Of course, if he has worn them in the water and/or if he constantly wears them (so that they get wet from sweat on a daily basis), the smell may denote a fungal, bacterial or algae presence... and if that is in the canvas... its going to be much harder to eradicate the smell.

Hi L.,
If they can be put in the washing machine to wash then let them air dry outside in a dry place for couple days, that might help.
I've done that for son's tennis shoes and hubby's work boots.
Good luck.

Can they be washed in the washing machine? Maybe stuff dryer sheets in them overnight. There's always Febreeze... If all else fails, contact the manufacturer. Maybe they'll send a new pair if they can't solve the problem.

I know this is likely resolved, but I have a product I absolutely love and it is perfect for this. It is made by Biokleen and it is called Bac-Out. It has a nice lime scent and it eats the oder causing bacteria. Here is a link:

Are you talking about the insides as in like "stinky feet" or the outsides as in he must have stepped in something awful??

For inside, I would sprinkle baking soday in them every night and leave them outside to air (if it is raining leave them when they cannot get wet) you should see an improvement by the end of 1 week.

If it is outside, I honestly do not know for that type of material..I am sorry...

Good luck!!! ;-)
