Hello everyone! I hope one of you green-thumbed gurus can help me! My DH mistakenly sprayed weed killer on our beautiful magnolia tree. All the leaves are now brown and dead-looking. Is there ANYTHING we can do to bring it back? Please, your advice is appreciated. Oh and I BELIEVE in PRAYING for EVERYTHING, so your prayers and good thoughts are appreciated too! Thanks.

What can I do next?

Depending on how badly he sprayed the tree, it may or may not be completly dead. One thing you can do is to scratch te bark with your finger nail to see if it is "green" underneath. Start at the top and work you way down. If you do find any green then the plant should be ok. You may have to cut it back some which will cut off the blooms for next year. It will need a good fertilizing. Depending on where you live, I would talk to the people at Family Tree Nursery. They have 3 stores, one in Liberty, Mo ###-###-#### speak to Jim Gardner, one in OP, KS ###-###-#### Speak to Shane Snow or Doug Seip, and one in Shawnee, Ks ###-###-#### speak to Ken Wood. They are the best at what they do. I worked for this company for 8 years before I deceded to become a SAHM. Good luck to you tree! E.

I also did the same to a potted hibiscus. I immediately sprayed it down with water. Then when the branches that I had sprayed started turning brown I cut them out of the plant. It didn't look so good for a year but it has come back this year. However there was no new growth on the branches I had sprayed.

The chemical your husband used will have a phone number or website you can contact & ask them what they think. I did something similar (weed killer on perinnial plants) & they told me to immediately water my plants to try & wash off the chemical. Start watering your tree asap! If he sprayed more than a few days ago, watering is useless. Call the company & ask for more specifics. Assuming your tree isn't very young, chances are, he killed the leaves & growth for the remaining season but it'll come back next year. Don't despair!

HI RJ, Hubbies do seem to get spray crazy sometimes.lol and Pruning crazy too. Your in IL I am in KS. We lived in TX for 6 yrs and adored the Magnolia trees there. so we found one here that was to be for this area. Well it has taken 9 yrs for it to get taller then I am. I am 5'6. It gets pretty & green ( no blooms yet) in the spring, by mid fall or late summer the leaves look like they have Blight. We even cover it in the winter.

Only thing I can think of RJ is to remove the leaves that look bad and Pray that helps, you could try getting one of those hose attached sprayers and use some mild detergent to see if you can wash off the weed killer. Lay some type of plastic under & around the tree so the run off won't get to the grass and roots of the tree.

All else fails call a green house in your area and check with them for a remedy.
We lost a Weeping Cherry Tree this spring after it bloomed it just flat Died :( Second year of blooms, was gorgeous :((

Good Luck to you RJ. God Made that Tree He sure can fix it too.
