Help! My Baby Is Crawling Out of His Crib!

I have a little boy who is going to be 18mos old tomorrow. Last night he decided to climb out of his crib for the first time! He got pretty good at doing it pretty fast! I kept picking him up and putting him back in his bed, but by the time I got to the doorway he was already at my heels! What do I do?!? I didn't put my first child into a big bed until she was almost 2 1/2. She never even attempted to crawl out so I've never had to deal with this before. I'm not sure I'm ready to transition my little guy to a toddler bed yet. He seems so little! Is that crazy? What suggestions do you have for me? I want to keep the trouble maker safe and secure in his bed! Help!

What can I do next?

My first one did the same thing. He was sleeping in zipper jammies and I used a diaper pin to pin his knees together for a few nights. After a few days he forgot he could get out, I had to do this a few different times before we moved him into a toddler bed but it was weeks sometimes even a few months in between escape attempts. He is 10 now and climbs everything he possably can. Good luck!

They make a net that you can put over the crib, kind of like a canopy, it's totally safe and it makes it so your little on can't climb out of the crib. Check out leapsandbounds.com. It's called The Cozy Tent. See if that works for you.

we used a crib topper when the kids were smaller (we have a cat). But our son actually started sleeping in a toddler bed at 14 months.

i've seen those crib topper things that are like mosquito netting things that go on top of the crib to keep the child inside.

My daughter is 20 months old and I just put her in a normal bed. She started crawling out of her crib at about the same age. Finally she fell and almost broke her arm. I think the safest thing to do is put him in a bed. Little ones can get hurt really easy taking a fall from a crib.

S.,
I have two boys and went through the same thing. We put both of them in big boy beds by the time they were 15 months. What we did though to help still keep them safe at night was put a gate in their doorway. We made sure that everything was up and that they could not crawl or climb to reach anything. Surprisingly they did quite well. They are 4 and 3 now and love their big boy beds. We did move their fish aquariums to their beds and put up side rails so they did not roll out of bed. Hope this helps.

My son was able to climb in & out, so we got one of the crib tents, and it has kept him in! It also helps keep his binkie in so he doesn't cry in the middle of the night because it's gone, I wish we would have gotten it before he started to climb out! Best of luck!

My daughter never crawled out of her crib, but I did put her in a toddler bed a little before she was 18 months. She did great. We had maybe 2 nights of transition, and she has been fine, sleeping all night in her big girl bed. It may seem like he's too young, but you should give it a go. I think it will be better than you expect. Good luck with the little guy!

I have a crib net. Basically it is put together like a tent and it goes over the crib and zips up so you can get your kid in and out. I love it some people may think it is mean but my son loves it as well. keeps him in it!!

Hi,

I had a similar problem when my little girl was 10 months old. She started throwing herself out of her crib and got pretty banged up a couple of times. She was so young so I was not ready for her to go into a toddler bed. I bought something called a crib tent. It worked like a charm. It is similar to the novelty tents you can buy for older kids twin beds only it is mesh and it fastens to the under side of the crib and the ends of the crib and zips closed so they can't get out. It is very safe and she was unable to get out after that. You can buy them on line or when we lived in California Toys R Us sold them. I don't know if they sell them here but I know you would be able to get it online. I still have mine if you are interested in buying it. They are pretty pricey if you buy them new, mine is used but back in the original box. If you are interested let me know. I hope this helps.

My son did the same thing at that age. Try lowering the side of the crib so it is more safe for him when getting out.

I just wanted to reassure you you're not alone!! My son is about 17 months old and he's already managed to get himself out of his playpen...so I'm waiting for the day when he figures out the crib exiting! HA. I figure I'll just go to a toddler bed soon- hopefully he'll adjust well.

Good luck!
