My 7 month old daughter used to take all her meds just fine, Tylenol, Mylacon, everything with no problem. Recently she started turning away or spitting it out right away, i have no idea what to do or how much that she actually swallowed...does anyone have any suggestions??

What can I do next?

I used to mix in a small amount of water or juice to get rid of the taste, but for the most part my daughter is strange lol because she's pretty much always loved the medicine.

B. nobody likes taking medication. i gag when i have to take a motrin. so yes my babes same reaction scream and pitch a fit and it actually gets worse as they grow older. only advice: put the syringe in the side of her moth pretty deep, not to make her gag, but deep so when you squeeze out the medicine it goes towards her throat. yes, it is never fun but has to happen.

Have you tried the medicine thing that looks like a pacifier? That seems to help my daughter - it's like nursing from a bottle, more familiar, I guess. Plus, you can add just a small amount of juice, sugar water, whatever once you've measured out the med.

My nearly 2 year old has been on prescription meds most of his life. He was the same... initially no problem as long as the taste was okay, and then no way, no say, no how. He would spit it out or gag himself and throw up. It was awful. We finally started putting meds into his bottle and now his sippy cup. I always put it into a bottle I knew he'd drink to the bottom... like his first morning's bottle and now in his first cup of Ovaltine that he drinks every morning. Without fail he takes all his meds along with his favorite drink. Hope that helps. Good luck and best wishes.

Try mixing it in applesauce...its a smaller amount than a whole bottle (my kids would just pitch the bottle)... cold seems to work better.
good luck! :)

The feedback about using the syringe is excellent, but hard to do by yourself. My daughter is 2 1/2 and we still have to put her meds in her juice. Good luck!

B.,
I feel for you. when my daughter was a baby we had the same problem. nothing would work for her except for 2 of us to do it. I hated to have to hold her down to administer meds but this is the only thing that worked. (i hated doing it) it was recommended by her doctor.
we would hold her down, usually on the floor on top of a towel (in case she got it out, would have a wash cloth handy too) and use a medicine syringe, putting it in the back of her mouth, and tip up her chin so she would swallow.

something else you can try first if you haven't tried yet is the flavor RX stuff the pharmacists have that will change the flavor of meds. try talking to a pharmacist.

good luck B.!
hugs,

Once my twins started eating cereal & solids, I would feed them a bit of their food and then "sneak" a spoonful (whatever the prescribed amount) onto the next bite then quickly follow it up with their food again. They would act shocked but since the next bite was followed by food again they quickly forgot about the bad taste.

My 7 month old twins get their meds in a nipple! I put the nipple in the ring, put a finger over the hole, squirt in the meds and pop it in thier moths. it goes right down and you do not have to worry about dilution or if they will finish something that it is mixed with completely!

This may sound a little strange but when you put the meds in her mouth (I agree with the syringe in the side of her cheek)but the follow up with blowing her he face her natural recation will be to swallow. This was the only way I could get my daughter to take her meds when she was younger and sick alot and on meds often.

HELLO! MY NAME IS W. AND I HAVE A 2 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WHO HAD TO TAKE A LOT OF MEDICINES WHEN SHE WAS SMALLER. AT FIRST SHE TOOK THE MEDICINE WELL, BUT IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE I'M GUESSING SHE WAS SICK OF IT AND STARTED TO SPIT IT OUT. SOMETHING THAT WORKED REALLY WELL FOR ME WAS THE MEDICINE PACIFIER. IT ONLY WORKS IF YOUR BABY LIKES THE PACIFIER. YOU POUR THE MEDICINE INTO A LITTLE MEDICINE CUP THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE PACIFIER AND AS THE BABY SUCKS ON THE PACIFIER THE MEDICINE COMES OUT OF THESE TINY LITTLE HOLES ON THE NIPPLE PART. I ALSO WOULD LIE HER DOWN ON HER BACK AND I WOULD PROP HER HEAD UP WITH MY HAND OR A PILLOW AND THEN I WOULD DISTRACT HER BY TALKING TO HER OR HOWEVER I COULD AND I WOULD TAKE THE MEDICINE SYRINGE AND SQUIRT IT INTO HER MOUTH. BEFORE SHE EVEN REALIZED WHAT HAD HAPPENED, SHE HAD ALREADY SWALLOWED HER MEDS. IT WORKED FOR ME BUT EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT SO IT MIGHT NOT WORK FOR YOU. I WISH YOU THE BEST OF LUCK! TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND YOUR BABY. ~W.
