My daughter is one year old, and since she started walking she has become little miss independent. This has made meal time very tedious, and since shes not quite feeding herself with a spoon, she eats very well with her finger foods. I was curious if you guys had any ideas of meals I could make that she could eat that is well balanced and nutrious? Oh i forgot she barely has four teeth =) I cant wait to hear your ideas!

What can I do next?

Dear Trish,

Cute, aren't they? I used to sit with my gr grandchildren and give them a bit or two of food that I had on a plate in front of me, while they
'fed' themselves, gets messy doesn't it? Bake a small yam like a baked potato and mix in butter. Feed her out of the skin and I bet that she will love that. Maybe put a glob on her plate for her little fingers. I just love to watch them pick up peas with those little tiny fingers. Also boil some carrots cut like little sticks so that they can eat them. Put in a bit of butter and bit of sugar, that won't hurt and make it more tasty. She will get used to eating carrots that way too. Do you put newspaper on the floor under her high chair? That helps too. Probably the other moms have good ideas, I am 76 and a bit tired of cooking. But I just had to say hello and give you some support. C. N.

Hi Trish,

Anything soft that she can pick up will be OK. You can cut up chicken into very small pieces and, even with 4 teeth, she will be able to chew it. Cook the veggies and slice them up too. My son didn't have 6 teeth when he turned one, all in the front, and he caught on to eating cereal (dry, with his fingers) pretty easily. In fact, it was pretty cute watching him chew his food with only his front teeth! Gerber has some diced pears and other fruits and vegetables that she can eat on her own...and she'll like doing it herself! Right now, anything you eat she can probably eat, if it is cut up into the smallest pieces. I know that Tristen still has some problems with beef, being able to chew it enough, so I would stick to the softer meats like chicken and turkey.

Take care!

Any thing that is soft. give her frozen waffles cut up in strips and then a banana. or let her eat oatmeal with her fingers. Just make sure that she has a spoon and encourage her to use it. She will eventually figure out that they go together. Then give her grilled cheese cut into chunks. Giver her things that she can hold but are soft. Pancakes, noodles, soft stuff. As long as she has fruit, veggies and some protein and some grains she is getting what she needs. Congrats!

Hi Trish,

My son doesn't like to sit down to eat so I have to be fast about getting him to eat food. He also has few teeth. So what I do is I make a bean and cheese burrito and cut it up into tiny squares.
Also, I put avacado, turkey, lettuce and hummus on a piece of wheat bread and cut it up in small pieces. Hope that helps and good luck!

Trust me when I say this: You beautiful Baby Girl will eat what she wants, when she wants it, weather it be with her fingers or a spoon and she will get the nutriution she needs. No child has ever starved because all they wanted to eat was the corn kernals off their plate or just the noodles out of the spegetti. As long as you provide her with a balanced meal, and she eats, you have done your job.

I feel ya on the little miss independent part, mine were the same way!!!! but I figured at that age all soft foods were the BEST espeacially mash&gravy and you can even throw mac&cheese if you want, I know it dont sound the healthiest---but my baby use to love for me to stop at KFC and let her sit in one of those toddlers chairs and go at it, she always thought it was a field trip:)lol and after a nice hot bath she was always nice, stuff and full and started sleeping at nights alot longer and better:) dont be afraid to feed her, just go with your guts and watch closey """due to mine were always greedy and loved to stuff their mouths 2 quickly:) :)

My son is 15 1/2 months and still only has 4 teeth. The amount of teeth he has doesn't stop him from eating everything we eat. I just make sure everything is cut into small pieces, i put him i his high chair and put his food directly on his tray (no plate). I always make sure to give him a spoon or fork which he usually holds in his hand (he watches us)but, still uses his fingers too. I've never used any of the baby food or graduates because they are so pricey. For quick meals he gets fresh fruits, bananas, watermelon, etc., frozen peas, canned green beans, pb&j sandwich cut into bite size pieces, cheese, basically you name it, if it can be cut up and is soft enough there is no reason it can't be eaten.
