I have a facebook friend from Canada, who often makes comments about how things are in the USA. In a recent post, she said that Anti drunk driving ads that are graphic are banned in the US. I told her to be careful with her US remarks, as I've seen a number of pretty graphic drunk driving commercials. She came back with a sort of apology and said that she is unable to find any on youtube that show actual impact. Now I haven't responded yet, but I KNOW I've seen some on TV. In my own very quick search, the few I found seem to have Canadian or UK tags on them. Can anyone that is more savvy than me find one, two or several that are clearly from the US?
Thanks for your help, Moms!
Thank you all for your input. I do appreciate it! And yeah, I wanted to prove her wrong because I'm tired of her slamming the US - case in point she said that anyone that votes Republican has a zero IQ. Usually I just shrug it off, but was in a grumpy mood yesterday and took the bait. I'm just not going to worry about it any further. I think I made my point and that is good enough. I still think that I have seen ads, one involving a motorcycle hitting a car. Thanks for helping!

i havent seen any TOO graphic. I think she;s right. they kind of imply it and cut to after effects but dont show dead babies or kids, or funerals or anything
She's right. We don't show the same commercials that they show.
On this one... She wins. Hands down. You wouldn't even think to argue if you'd ever seen ANY of these.
They ARE banned in the US, because of the R rating they each have, they cannot be shown on TV.
Here's 2 montages (WARNING : Graphic)
Antidrink:

Safe driving (multiple causes)

Many of these are combos of real footage (caught on CCTV, and others) & restaged.
Similarly, you see extremely DIFFICULT filmed/stages ads mocking up actual accidents in CA & UK, that are banned here.
Here's a link to one in whole/ anti-text

THESE ARE ILLEGAL IN THE US (to be shown on TV) because of how graphic they are. Any US commercials have to meet our ratings, so you will not find any more graphic commercials than the ones shown in the commonwealth.
Sorry, Canadians are never wrong. (:
First, I honestly think your friend is right about the ads...and that doesn't bother me. We don't need graphic drunk driving ads to prove a point. People know what can happen. I wish we'd get rid of the Viagra/Cialis commercials and a bunch of others, too.
NOW, on to helping you with your Canadian friend. How irritating. I have a brother who lives in Canada, and through him I've experienced much the same thing...and from a few other people I know from Canada. If you want a good retort, you might mention something about how if your appendix decides to rupture you don't have to die waiting to get a doctor's appointment. (A bit of an exaggeration, but that seems to be the course she likes to take.)
Like Mamazita, I only recall seeing anti-texting ads recently that were pretty grapic (saw them on TV).
I think Europe and Canada might have more graphic ads/PSAs than we do, the US does kind of chicken out. I was a kid when my father was on the California Highway Patrol and at five years old was reading their internal magazine that showed gnarly, awful accident scene photos without the blurring of anything!! I doubt it could be published this way any more.
Why not just "unfriend"?
I don't think that we have the same type of ads that Canadians, Europeans, and even Australians have. Case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b69J_bMoYk No, I've never seen an ad like this in American tv. We tend to me more obscure and make implications with our ads, like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSFm32ozyos
I wouldn't be supportive of having this on during the daytime, but could support having it on after 8 pm, when most young kids have gone to bed.
Why do you have to prove her wrong? Are you just sick of her bashing the US? Hide her on your news feed so you don't have to see her comments.
If she is researching the US drunk driving ads on youtube then she has a LOT of time on her hands. Don't waste yours arguing with her. :)
*The others are right, you know. We don't have graphic ads and I am so thankful!!! I don't know that graphic is necessarily effective. I don't want my kids to have to see pictures of dead babies or any person, for that matter. I have friends that are first responders. They are trained for this sort of thing and it still gives them nightmares.
A lot of cultures/ethnicities/foreigners, for lack of a better word, hate the US and what this country stands for...YET, given the opportunity, most would like to come here.
This country is far from perfect but then again, show me a country that is and you may as well show me a ticket to the land of make believe.
If you want some ammo here is one. What good is all that graphic ad if it is not so effective. Here is a link that shows an increase in DUIs if Canada for the last 5 years.

Our state liquor board has a pamphlet that they hand out to teens that has a very graphic set of images of a woman with a badly (BADLY) smashed and re-constructed face. It shows the car, the injuries shortly after they happened, and how she looks after many surgeries.
I don't want to see a dead child. I don't want my kids to have to see that, either. I am hoping that I can get the message across to my children by telling them why they have never met one of their Aunties. She was killed at 18 as a passenger in truck driven by a drunk driver. That's graphic enough for us.
arent we not suppose to shun or put down a certian group or ethnesity. isnt bulling remarks about the us crule? as you can see i have had a public education and cannot spell. but i can be kind to people. try your best to be a positive person in her life.
the commercials your talking about where the car hits the other car i think were for car insurance...not drunk driving? i remember them and they were shocking. before kids i could watch horror movies and now it really gets me creeped out and woozie. i also have small children and dont want to expose them to these types of things yet. i remeber catching one scene in bullrat or some movie like that where a older naked man and he were on a bed together talking very dirty. while i am sure the movie is very funny. i was stunned and had to quickly change the channel in fear one of my kiddos was going to walk in!!! it was 7 pm. there is a time and place for everything. if people dont agree she is intitled. killing it with kindness!
It is the implication and then the results that are shown on our commercials. They are regulated..
Now in a Driving classes and defensive driving classes, they do show footage of actual accidents.
In my experience Canadians have a very low opinion of the US . . . and perhaps for good reason, perhaps not. Yet I see MANY Canadian tags down here in SoFla during the winter. So there must be some redeeming quality. ;)
It's annoying when people do that sort of thing on FB.
That being said, I wouldn't worry about it. I ignore friends that get on rants like that and don't bother trying to correct them.
It sounds like you are having a pi$$ing contest. Why is it soooooo important?
Better question: Why is it so important to have so much conflict in your life?
Sorry, but I'm going to side with your Canadian friend. Much ado about nothing anyway - let it go.
Why do you need to prove her wrong? Let her think what she wants. Is this really worth your time?
Perhaps Canada IS harder on DUIs. Just this weekend a professional football player was killed in a drink driving accident when his teammate and college friend was driving. After his friend was previously convicted.
I don't think it's the right purpose to point right or wrong.
It's drunk driving. Who cares which coutry is harsher with ads? It should matter which country stands up to punishment.
