Prime it with Kilz or Zinser from Lowes. They will know if you need oil based or not. It will work. It is way more work than plaster or drywall but so wooortth it.

You have to prime it first. If it's dark paneling, it might require two coats of primer. Then paint.
Hope this helps!
I 4th the primer answer. :)
Kilz primer. Kinda costly, but it works.
J. - PRIMER!! Primer is your friend when painting!!
If you are painting over red, black or other dark/bright colors - primer really does help.
Painting over paneling needs primer if you aren't going to remove the paneling.
HAVE FUN!!! changing your home!!!
You are supposed to prepare the surface first by possibly stripping it, priming it and then painting it. I also believe that primer and paint will work too.
Definitely go back to the paint store and inquire what should be done and then follow the instructions. I'm pretty certain primer and then paint would work better.
You want to seal the paneling first with something like Kiltz (sp?) then paint. It makes a HUGE difference. You can get Kiltz anywhere paint is sold.
You need to use primer first.
You need to prime it. I used paneling primer since it was specifically for that purpose. I am not sure regular primer would be good enough. You might be able to find an 'oops' primer colour for cheap which you could try. Good luck.

Don't know if these links help but you have to prepare it.
Yes, some paneling is like a sponge. First paint the paneling with a primer such as Kilz, then paint over with your colors.
You have to prime the surface first.
Technically the answer is primer.
However, I did paint (light) right over paneling in my very first apartment and none of the horrors of which I was warned of ever did happen.
But you might need a LOT of paint. :)
I'm with everyone else about the primer. Our den is all paneling (ugly), and we first used Kilz primer very generously, then painted over. Mind you, it took my husband about 7 coats of paint for it to take and look really good, but it was so worth it! Oh, and before the primer, we cleaned and somewhat sanded the paneling because it was very old. Hope this helps. Good luck!
I am going to echo Kiltz, but also warn against being tempted by the expensive "primer and paint" in one.
What a crock! after three coats I could still see the lines where we changed from tan to light blue in my son's room when we updated from a nursery.
So word of warning - prime and paint seperately - the all in one stuff is not all it's cracked up to be.
Best,
I used Kilz Primer Paint, then my selected paint over the well dried Kilz.
Kilz primer is the way to go. Thank goodness is warm here because you will need to open up the house because it stinks something fierce! All we needed was one coat of it and it worked like a charm! Have fun!
Get enamel paint in the color you prefer, they have semi-gloss if you don't want it that shiny or you can use primer like everyone else is saying & then your regular paint, either one will work.
