What kind of racing? If it is car racing, maybe you can dress up in a sexy race car driver outfit that night. I bet you could find something on Amazon.com that is not too pricey!

You could post a huge sign on your front lawn that says, "HONK!! BOB IS 40!!!!" All day long, you'll hear your neighbors honk in honor of your hubby:)

This may sound like a stupid gift idea but all the guys in our family LOVE them! We get them multiple times a year because they crash them!

At Brookstone there are remote controlled helicopters. They are like $30 or something. They are great! I think you can find some at Target, etc. but I always get the ones at Brookstone. They also have more expensive ones but I get the cheap ones because our men are not very good fliers. LOL

Let the kids decorate a small box and fill with 40 small rocks.
Then write
"40 Rocks!!" on the side or on a little sign to stick in the top.

You could also fill the box with 40 suckers and write
"40 Sucks!"

depending on how he/you feel :)

Have the kids hand make cards for him. Make him breakfast in bed. Bring him the newspaper, and the remote, and then take the kids out of the house for a few hours. Men aren't that differant from women in wanting alone time in the house just to do whatever they want in peace and quiet. The rest of the day just let him do what he wants. Don't give him any honeydos.

Not knowing him and his interests, kind of makes it hard. Guys are pretty simple usually, and what you already have planned he will sure love and it will probably be enough for him. However, if you want to give him something more; after the kids go to bed, offer to give him a whole body oil massage. Guys don't usually ask for this kind of stuff, but my husband loves massages.
You can get him a gift card to Home Depot if he likes tools and such. It's hard to think of different things for our hubby's birthday. I even have a hard time when it comes around for my husband's birthday.
I hope these few suggestions help. Happy Birthday to your hubby! :-D Hope you all have a great family day out! Oooooh...wait...I know you said you don't have a lot of money right now, but this is something you can save up for....My husband and I LOVE Amusement parks! That would be a great family day out...perhaps you can save up for that one day and make it a special day for all of you. :-)

For my husband's 40th, I bought a large canvas at Joanne's and three colors of paint. I had each of 3 children put their hands in the paint and make handprints on the canvas. My oldest one also wanted her own canvas to paint a picture of him and painted a pug (the kind of dog my husband wants) and a rainbow (b/c she's 5 and loves rainbows). My husband loved it and has both hanging in his office.

You could always throw a party and ask everyone to bring a dish ect;
Just decide what you can afford to supply and go from there. You could even have a theme. Mexican, Italian or a BBQ. The more laid back the better!
Another Idea I had for my own hubby is plan a day for him to do something on his own, or with a buddy. Like Golf, concert ect;

You could decorate a neat jar and you and the kids write on 40 individual pieces of paper why he is a great husband, dad, etc. 40 reasons we celebrate you, or something like that? It would be inexpensive and very heart warming

I loved the canvas idea. Thanks, Kate, I'm filing that one away for my husband's next birthday! :)

Have a great time!

Sign up for Blue Mesa Grill chili head rewards and you get a free buffet on your birthday. That's what we do for my hubby every year. More than worth it for BMG....we usually get out of there for under $25 for the two of us. (We took our twins last year and they ate free...they were r3).
