Hi,
I have been reading all the wonderful replies and now hope receive some help from you wonderful moms.
I am planning on going back to work full time soon and want to make sure my 12 month old baby boy is settled in daycare first.

We have tried a large scale daycare for two days a week, but unfortunately the schedule these kind of places imposes on children does not suit my child's need nor fit with my view on child upbringing. I believe children this young are entitled to two daily naps, one morning and one early afternoon in a quiet environment and when the child is ready. Sadly it seems that these large scale daycares believe children only need one nap, immediately after lunch and is expected to take place in the general play room.

I am looking for a small scale daycare, run by a kind, caring and responsible person who understands the need of working with children and provide structure without being rigid in their approach. - Does such a place/person exist ???.

While I need to get back to work to help support my family, I can't do this and be happy until I know my baby is in good hands.

What can I do next?

Hi L., We have used LittleHandzdaycare.com on a drop in basis she is located near Frank Love Elementary. I know she takes care of other children full time and her establishment is licensed so she meets all the certifications needed. Sherri is good with the children, fun and clean. I am not sure if her hours will work for you. But might be a place to check out. Good luck!

Hi L.- I understand your frustration. My soon to be sister-in-law worked in one of those big daycare centers (kindercare) and I would NEVER put my child in one of those!
However, I think that at that age one nap a day is enough. Children that age can usually take a good 3 hour nap in the afternoon (around 1pm) and that is a lot of sleep. But, I also know that some kids are still needing two naps, although they may not be long naps!! Soon, your son will only be taking one nap (before you know it!!)
My advice on the looking for a daycare....find a nanny!! I may be biased (because I am a nanny), but this way you can have one person (maybe with their child, preferably around your son's age so he has a playmate) taking care of your baby that can follow your parenting plan. I know that in my situation it has worked very well being able to communicate with the mama and myself and make sure that we are on the same page with raising her daughter. When I started she too was 12 months. You can go to sittercity.com or craigslist (which is how I got hired on) and look for nanny's in your area. I would volunteer for you, but am happy in my job right now (I will only be working for one more year, then onto a new family!)
Someone else mentioned a home daycare...that is good too, although can also be expensive. Just a thought. If you hire a nanny (SAHM) you will probably be paying about $300 a week (that's about what I make) with a very small child to adult ratio (one or two kids to the nanny). If you are in a home daycare you probably will have 5-8 kids to the 1 adult. I don't know, but sometimes children have hard days (whining or sick)and it's good to have a nanny that can give your child that extra TLC.
Good luck to you! L.
Mom of two boys (3 and 6) and nanny to three more (2,9,13). oh my!
