R., you have received some awesome advice so far. I too nursed while pregnant and am still tandem nursing my 1 yr old and my 3 1/2 yr old. It can be done. And if your Dr. tells you to quit nursing because of the pregnancy, find a new Dr. LOL! Seriously, though, my first two were close and I nursed my first while I was pregnant with my second. I nursed my second while I was pregnant with my third.

There's a great birth center in Old Town Alexandria you might want to look into. Midwives tend to be sooo wonderful with mothers of babies close together such as your own. <http://www.birthcare.org/index.html>

Best of luck. And, congratulations.

I have nursed twins and I know you can do it!! Your body will produce what you need. Some women go into nursing with a prediction to fail & I did just the opposite. I took th bull by the horns, so-to-speak & I told myself that I wouldn't give up. Giving the fact that your baby will be older and most likely not be nursing as much when you begin with the new baby, so you will have plenty of time for your body to respond how it should!
Good luck!!!

My daughter was 9 months old when I got pregnant with my son. I nursed her throughout the pregnacy and both of them afterwards. My daughter breastfeed until she was 2 years old my son stopped breastfeeding at 9 months old(A couple of weeks after my daughter weaned herself). At first thought it was a nursing strike but he kept biting and trying to get away so i knew he was telling me something. I did have one nurse (not my normal pregnancy nurse) tell me that I shouldnt breastfeed while pregnant and I told her that my nurse and teh lactation consultant said there was nothing wrong with it. Even my doctor was supportaive. It will be hard with two especially at the different ages. I remember my first day home. DH had to go to work(he had a new boss who was being a A**hole) so i was alone with the two kids my first day out of the hosptial. I sat down to breastfeed my newborn and my daughter wanted to breastfeed also. I remember sitting on the couch breastfeeding both of them and started crying becuase I didn't know how i would get them out of the house if there was a fire. My mind was over doing itsself but I was still scared. Make sure you have support becuase you may need it. Breastfeeding can be challenging with one baby and with two it could be worse. You can do it. Just keep your mind on it and if anyone tells you different just tell them that your nurse, doctor, latation consultant told you (whatever tehy will tell you).

Good Luck sorry this was so long! If you need any help i am here to answer any questions if i can.

Hi R.

I got pregnant with my son when my daughter was about 6.5 months old. I was nursing her and continued until she was 13 months. She pretty much self weaned. At that point she had only really been nursing at night and I noticed that she really wasn't that interested, but would take it for a short time if I offered. She never went looking on her own and didn't ask for milk if my husband or someone else put her to bed. One night I just didn't offer - it was starting to get harder since my belly was getting pretty big. She was fine and she was done. Since she was only nursing once a day anyways, I didn't have issues with engorgement or anything either. It really was the smoothest possible transition. She was perfectly fine when my son came along and started nursing - no jealously. Just very matter-of-fact about him drinking my milk now. He continued longer - till about 19 months. He started his weaning more abruptly. He had a reaction to cashews and I had eated a couple too so he couldn't nurse for 48 hours. He did return to nursing after that period, but it was much less as he learned to accept soy milk during the off time and weaned not long after that.

lol! "tantrum nursing"!!! omgosh that is such a funny typo :D

I continued to nurse my youngest son when I was pregnant with my daughter, they are 23 months apart. I tandem-nursed them for a year. There were things I didn't like, for instance I felt "touched out" a lot and often had nothing left for my husband :( but luckily I am totally blessed to be married to the most understanding man in the entire world, he just waited patiently and we traded a lot of foot rubs instead. He understood how important extended nursing was to me, how important it was to the babies, and we knew it was only a temporary situation.

That said, those two are the closest of any of my four kids. They play together like two peas in a pod :D And it was a heck of a lot easier and cheaper than formula. Nursing through the pregnancy helped me avoid sore nipples and engorgement, both I experienced with all my boys.

I bet you're pretty scared right now, and it will be a very busy life having two so close in age, but the rewards far outweigh the problems. Make sure you have the support you need and it will be a joyful ride!

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding has a great section on tandem nursing, in fact I suggest it to all nursing moms, it was my bible for 10 years.
