My youngest son does not have very good fine motor skills, so he is not able to button or fasten regular pants. I always have trouble finding pants for him. He is tall and very skinny. It seems like every pair I can find that have elastic waist whether they are cargos or athletic the waist is so big and would slip right off him. It is hard to find pull on pants with the adjustable straps or athletic pants that have ties that actually tie. Most of them are just for looks. I am having a hard time finding anything that will fit him. If anybody has any ideas or suggestions I would love to hear them. Thank you for your help. K.
Regardless of your son's age, elastic waist pants/shorts are always easier for a kid. No matter what their motor skills may be.
Put it this way, my daughter is 8 and my son is 4, and they both still wear, elastic or adjustable waist, or snap button pants or shorts.
THEY like it better and I do too... it is also easier for them to dress.
My Daughter even if she is 8 and can do buttons, HATES buttons because sometimes the button holes are too small or the button cannot slide in and out of its hole, very well. It irritates even me.
Anyway: Old Navy and Gymboree, has elastic waist jeans for kids.
That is where I get mine, or "The Children's Place" or Gymboree.
Old Navy... HAS "slim" sized jeans, 'regular' ,and "husky." AND ALL their jeans are ADJUSTABLE waist... with the elastic inside the waist of the pants etc. And, their pants do have 'snap button' type closures. I just looked there.
Try Old Navy.
I shop there, online, all the time for my kids. They also have great sales all the time.

Or, what if you get a size, smaller for him???? Like a size 5?? Will that fit better? Per elastic waist pants/athletic pants. That way, then maybe it won't slip off him.
Gymboree for example, has great clothes, but their sizing is generous. Meaning, their clothes tend to be long... .and cut more generously. So you can get a size, down or size smaller.
I would try Walmart first.
Good luck.
My son, SAME thing!!! Tall and skinny so waist is always too big. You can find adjustable jeans at Target and Boston Store. You can also find jeans or pull ons for the days he is somewhere you can't keep buttoning pants for him, Walmart and sometime, not often, Target.

All the ties tie (and are real AND sewn in the middle so they don't fall out), all the ones without ties have thick/ wide/ double ply/ buttoning elastic inside the waistband that gets buttoned on each side and typically has 3-5 holes on each side to adjust quite neatly... the "button" fly on most up to 7/8 is a "slide" instead of a button so fine motor issue kids and toddlers can do their own "buttons". HIGH quality fabric and construction (reinforced everything, these clothes get outgrown instead of worn out).
Downside: They're expensive. Only buy 1 thing to start and you get added to their list, and you'll never pay full price again. Buy 3 get 1 for a dollar is my favorite sale (happens 3 or 4 times a year), they also have 20% off and free shipping an awful lot.
It's a British company, so sizing is slightly different. Make sure to check their sizing chart before purchasing.
My son age 7 is very slim and refuses to wear pants with a button or snap or tie. I have found slim sized pull on pants at LL Bean and Lands End. I also have had luck getting him track pants at Target that were slim enough (I had him try them on ). Old Navy is huge on his waist! I am always looking though...thrift stores, other stores. I'm constantly on the lookout!
I didn't read your other posts, but Carter's has some great pants options. I just bought about 5 pairs for my tall and skinny boy :) If you don't have a Carter's store nearby, you can always go online. They have the adjustable waists on all the pants I bought. Good luck!
I just get the regular snap jeans that have the pull elastic with a button. Set the adjustable waist to a size that your son can easily pull down.
my kids are the same way. my son can't snap or button things very well, either. i buy the snap or button jeans with the adjustable waist, leave them a little loose so that he can pull them up and down with no problem. you can get them just about anywhere. but i would say JCP has good ones from arizona that you can get on sale for cheap and they are cute and Old Navy., too.
Childrens place doesn't have pull ons in a slim but they do have an adjustable waist maybe those will work.
Edited: children's place has slim online only
What about some of those pants that have a draw string. You can take the string out and put in some elastic and then sew it shut. That way you make the waist the size you need and if he grows you can replace the elastic with a longer piece. I let our little guy wear shorts with elastic waists that have the strings too.
My son is also very tall and skinny and wears the adjustable waist pants (the kind with the elastic pulled over buttons to make it tighter or looser) anyway... Even with jeans and other bottoms with zippers and buttons, most of the time he just pulls them up and down like sweatpants. Once you adjust the elastic, every pair of pants becomes a pull on pant (just leave the button and zipper closed).

Our son also wears a slim size and we have gone through this. Even if you find an adjustable waist, you also want the rest of the pant not to be hugely baggy, so slim size is ideal.
I second Lands' End. Get on their email and Facebook lists to access their discounts. Also check their overstocks page for deals. They always have at least one slim style in pull-on.
Children's Place doesn't sell slim anymore, I believe, but they do make adjustable waist pants that aren't huge. Our son can wear those in regular size and doesn't look like a clown. They're pull-on.
Gymboree and Crazy 8 will sell the slim in pull-on periodically. Some seasons are better than others for finding them in that style.
Good luck!
