My daughter was sent home from school today after an infestation this week. We were able to give her the rid shampoo and combed her hair out. Problem is, I am 6 weeks pregnant and can't use the RID on myself. Does anyone know of a home remedy that has worked?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I can't tell you all how much I appreciate your thoughts!! I will definitely try the Nuvo, as the website looks pretty convincing, so worth a try, and then maybe add a spritzer of the tea tree to prevent any more for the next few weeks. Her school keeps it going around with kids parents not taking proper precautions. I'm relieved with this info since my ob told me not to use RID or Nix, they did say I could use the carefree, but I think I'll try the cetaphil first. Thanks again!!

I have no clue if this works or not, but I have heard that slathering mayonnaise in the hair might be worth a try.

Holly-
In addition to cleaning hair and bedding, I would suggest trying to clean the couches in your home too. Best of luck, they are persistant little creatures...I am standing here itching my head just thinking about it!

It's been going around here lately. I hate to tell you this, but they are also resistant to pesticides, so the RID alone won't work. You MUST KEEP COMBING and nit-picking. I recommend any of the smothering methods in addition to the pesticides (or in addition).

Buy the product LiceFreee. It's a non-pesticide "smothering" method, but the reason I recommend it is that it comes with the best lice comb you can buy at the drugstore. It's about $20. Not sure if safe to use in pregnancy, but definitely no neurotoxins in the formula.

Then, read this website on using Cetaphil as a smothering method:J http://www.nuvoforheadlice.com/

Follow the directions exactly. It's the combination of smothering and completely drying the hair that makes it work. You can use it in addition to RID on your child, but wait a few days for the RID to get out of her hair before you blowdry.

Good luck! I almost went out of my mind when I was going through this earlier this summer. It was the Cetaphil that was the breakthrough treatment - my younger son kept getting reinfested from somewhere and we could not pinpoint it no matter how many hours we spent nitpicking and washing bedding. Do not trust the directions on the RID to wait 7 days! Do yourself a favor and keep combing every 1-2 days.

get straight tea tree oil. one time on a class trip we found out that one of the girls that came had a BAD infestation. We were all doing each others hair in the hotel room. Needless to say we freaked out. After being together for only a few days it had already got to some of the other girls. We informed our leader who went and bought like 10 bottles of tree tea oil and we all took turns having her wash our hair with it. we sat with it on our hair for i want to say ten min. then we did it again a few days later. she also sent us all home with a bottle. It kept me from ever getting infested, and everyone including infested girl bug free. im sure there is a link or something you can find, just look up tea tree oil. hope this helps! A.

Tee tree oil might work. You should also wash your hear with a tee tree oil based sampoo. My doctor suggested this once when I thought my daughter might have had lice.

I have heard that a strong vinigar solution and using a fine tooth comb would work - but you would have to do it more then once.
