Help!!! He Wants to Get Rid of Netflix!!!

My husband suddenly wants to get rid of Netflix (we only have instant streaming) and replace it with a Roku box for all the "free stuff" he can get.

I, however, LOVE Netflix. It's all the stuff I want to watch...The Office, Robin Hood, King of the Hill, Monk, the Discovery ID shows, Clean House, Hoarders, The Biggest Loser, and on and on...plus, for my children, Curious George, Shaun the Sheep, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Popeye, etc.

Can you really get "this and so much more" with a Roku box, for free? He seems to think so, but all I can find are a bunch of made up channels with ridiculous shows I've never heard of, or a FEW episodes of shows I don't even like (like Seinfeld.)

Please, enlighten me!!

So What Happened?

Hah...submission. That's a great one!! :) Yes, I live in submission to my husband, and his word is the final word. Which is why I have to make a good point now. :) And yes, I am currently illustrating a book, to the mama who asked... :) ...but I don't pay bills. I would if I had to...and I've though about just taking over that payment...but then, that's back to submission.

Thanks for all the valuable input...you've really just verified through your experience what I thought was the case, so THANK YOU ALL!!!

I think he needs to do more research on Roku.

Lots of people like it...because they use it to stream Netflix and Pandora to their HDTV. But lots of people also hate it. If he wants Roku, he needs to keep Netflix. It's not an alternative to Netflix...it's access TO it.

Excuse me. Aren't you being consulted? Marriage is a series of compromises and things you do for your partner out of love. It cannot be an edict to get rid of something your wife really enjoys.
Start talking to him about the way things come down and let him know how important Netflix is for you and the children.
Netflix is better than anything else including On Demand or HBO which you might already have.

I would fight tooth and nail to keep my netflix. I love all the shows they have, and they have a ton of documentarys which I just love!

We just got Netflix a little over a month ago (free trial) and my husband said he didn't want to keep it. I told him "too bad!" because we were keeping it.

We have a Roku - but without our subscription to Netflix, there is VERY LITTLE that we could watch for free on it.

My husband actually was disappointed at how little we can watch with it even WITH our Netflix subscription. Roku doesn't "subscribe" to all the free stuff apparently. If we had an X-Box or something else, we might be able to access more free programing.

We considered Roku, but it's pointless. Netflix is the way to go! I hope your husband considers you in this decision.

The kids shows on Netflix are fab (we love Shaun the Sheep too, have your kids ever watched Timmy Time? So cute!).

The Bible also says to "submit one to another", bringing me back to the point that your husband doesn't just get to decide to do what HE wants, he also needs to consider your needs and wants. I hope he hears you out!

I had to go to your profile to see you are a stay at home mom. I am a Christian too and I do believe in being submissive, but I'm not very good at it....in fact, my husband NEVER tells me what to do so it's a moot point. You need to make money of your own. I can't imagine living with someone else calling all the shots. Are you illustrating any books right now?

Get the box and KEEP Netflix. The free movies are mostly junk movies, full of sex and violence. There won't be enough free stuff to watch without paying for Netflix. The Netflix movies are awesome on the tv through ROKU.

Tell him he can do his own thing but that you want netflix left alone. That way you can have yours and he can have his. It's not that expensive. If he says no then by all means take in some ironing, babysit a friends child so she can go to the grocery store by herself, run some errands for someone, do a paper route, find some way to make the minimal amount to pay for netflix yourself, in your name, that way he can't call and turn it off when he feels like ti.

There isn't a lot of free content on Roku that is of great quality. You can get some of the shows you mention via Hulu but if you want full episodes/seasons then you need to subscribe to Hulu Plus which is about the same cost as Netflix.
