My daughter sleeps well 10-12 hours a night, but she does not nap much during the day and by the time 6:30 she is about as fun a stubbing your toe. Should I wake her up earlier in the morning and not let her sleep so late? I want to enjoy my baby when I get home from work? Please Help!!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My daughter who doesn't nap is turning 13 mos. old on Sunday. My mom keeps her during the day and we have decided to try getting her out more to see if we can get rid of some energy. We are trying not to put her to bed before 800 pm so that she will wake up before 7:30 am. I am really hoping this works. I also think she is probably teething too because lately ( last week or so she has not eaten well.) Anyway, I would just like to thank all of you for your advice and I will certainly trying them all if this doesn't work. :)

You don't mention her age, but if she doesn't nap, perhaps at least have her do quiet time for an hour or so. This may give her the down time she needs. I begin quiet time with reading then my two play in their rooms. It usually does the trick. If not for my son, he will take a 'power nap" at about 5:30 for 30 minutes & be right as rain. hope this helps.

I can only imagine how difficult it is for your child to go to sleep so early and not be able to spend time with her. I do not think waking her early in the morning is going to solve the problem. if anything she will be crankier and less eager to spend time with you. Is there a reason why she is not napping during the day? I think that is probably the only way you could get her to stay awake longer for you at night. Children need at least 12 hours sleep a day so I wouldn't really mess with the nightime routine, but I would try to get her to nap during the day. Is she in daycare, or with a private sitter. I own a daycare center and most of the children under 2 nap for two hours, and some three and four year old children still nap as well. If she is with a sitter I would make sure she is getting enough stimulation during the day so she will be tired enough for a nap even if it is an hour that will give her the energy to maybe do a 7:30 bedtime for you. Did the time change effect her because if that is the case her body may just need another week or so to adjust. Do you give her a bath in the evenings, if so then maybe each night move it back 15 minutes and maybe in a week or so you can get her to 7:30. The one thing you don't want to do is to have her get overtired because then she will not have a restful sleep. If you have to stick with this bedtime then just spend the extra time on the weekends that you have with her. I am sure you feel worse then she does at this point. As long as the time you spend with her is one on one then it really doesn't matter how many hours it is.

i don't know what time she wakes up, but my son sleeps about 10 hours at night, then takes a 1-2 hour nap. he goes to bed at 8, sleeps till about 6, naps from 12-2'ish, then bed again at 8. i have friends whose children don't have to get up for daycare or school (one parent stays home with them), and it's easy to get in the habit of letting them sleep as late as they want in the morning, but i don't really think it's best for them. kids need that break during naptime.
