Help Finding Shoes

My 2 year old daughter has to wear braces on her feet because she walks on the inside of her feet. Which has never been a problem until now. However here is the problem: It is summer time and she doesn't like her feet to get hot and she doesn't want to wear her shoes. Can anyone recommend some sandals that would give her enough support or that would fit with her braces. She now has to wear a 6 wide. Thanks

C.,

You didn't say if you've taken her to be fitted at a good shoe store? We love Stride Rite shoes and they take the time to ensure the fit is good. Because you have a "special need" you're probably going to have to pay more.

I really think that it's "worth it" to get the right fit - especially if you need wides. Perhaps once you find a "good shoe" you can find it cheaper somewhere else for next time...but for now, pay the money to make sure your daughter's feet are being taken care of.

You can also call The Walking Co (at Woodfield) to see if they have kids sizes. I was just referred there by fellow Mamasource Moms and LOVED IT. They have Eccos, Danskos and other high quality shoes, but I don't know about kids' sizes.

How did she get fit with the braces in the first place? Did you see a pediatric orthopaedic doctor? If you did, I would call their office and find out if there is a shoe store or kind of shoe they recommend. Or call the place that fit her with the braces. They should be able to direct you. Good luck!

Hi C.,

I'm a pediatric PT. First of all DO NOT put her in Crocs w/her braces. They are good beach/play shoes but are never a true fit since they run in dual sizes. Your best best is to do what the PP said. See if the orthotist can recommend a good local shoe store. I send all my kids to Gotskinds. They have a store in Naperville and Glen Ellyn. To be honest it will be tough to find a sandal she can wear her braces with. Good luck!

You can also check with a physical therapist location near you. They work with children with these kinds of concerns and they can give you good suggestions to places that would be closer to your home. I know my physical therapist talked to me about creating a sandal with built-in orthotics - they ship out an order through their location, once they size you.

Or, a local foot doctor may be able to offer you a coupon for a local store that carries high end shoes. I was given a 10% off coupon/script for the New Balance shop, when I went to my podiatrist.

Good luck.

Stride Rite does carry wide width shoes/sandals. I have my daughter fitted at the store and then order online at shoebuy.com or zappos.com. It is free shipping for the order and returns, so you could order a few sizes and determine the best fit/comfort level.

Have you tried Crocs (the real name brand, not the imitation ones)? They are supportive and have a roomy fit. They also have "ventilation" for the feet! Both of my girls wear them all summer long.
