my little angel was born at 37 weeks and 6 days by c-section due to his small weight and non fetal movement , he had heart problems and weight problems but those are turning out ok . even though he weighed 4 lbs 11.9 oz at birth he is now at 6 lbs 12 oz 5 weeks later . my problem is the dr has him on neosure because of his small weight and he is also on zantac for reflux , however i think he has a problem with the milk in the formula , because he keeps gas and he screams for 3 and 4 hours every night . i mentioned to my dr that both my other boys couldnt digest milk but its like he blew me off and didnt even want to try to switch my sons milk . right now hes on neosure and he is so unhappy please help if anyone knows what i should do and also if you think i need to switch his milk

So What Happened?

ok we are now at 11 weeks and alot has happened . we now see a g.i. for his gerd that he does have and he takes axid so far. and well as for different formulas none worked longer than 5 days not even the soy turns out hes allergic to milk and soy and the reg peds didnt even notice the signs which were poor weight gain ( they thought this was becasue of gerd which some was ) eczema which was severe and constapation due to formula intolarance . he is now on elecare which is milk and soy free since its an ammino acid base ,so we are starting to gain a little weight we are up to 8 lbs 8 ozs but its a long road and were taking it one day at a time

HI,
I don't know if anyone told you this yet or not, but Dr. Brown's bottles are AWESOME. My son had colic for 6 months, and once I switched to these bottles, his symptons were cut in half. Plus, we switched to Nutramigen by Enfamil and it did wonders also. THat was actually the 3rd formula we had to change to, and he took to it immediately.

Hope this helps.

You are the mom if you feel like he doesn't like the milk I would change what you are feeding him. I would try to find a doctor who is more willing to listen to what you have to say.

R.,

You are the best gauge of what's good for your child and what is not. Although the doctor has medical training he is not with your child 24/7. My suggestion is that you find a doctor that listens and responds to your concerns - not one that blows you off. Good luck.

R.,

Poor you and poor baby! ;( That's so rough on you both when baby isn't happy!

My son couldn't tolerate regular (milk-based) formula at all. We put him on soy formula, and he did great! We never had any other problems with him after that. We also used Mylicon drops when he did get gas -- they worked wonders on him!

My daughter has been exclusively breastfed until about 2 weeks ago(now she gets just one bottle a day at night). Even with just the one bottle of formula, we noticed that she was starting to cry and have bad stomach pains and gas last week. We switched her to the soy formula, and she's had a great week!

Best wishes to you! I hope you and your sweet little one get some relief! Good luck!

Also, just thought of one more thing. We swear by the Dr. Brown's bottles! They're great! They seemed to help both of my kids have less gas and issues. You can buy them at most any store that sells baby products (Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Target, etc.).

I am not sure where you live, but I am sure that you have a pediatrician in your area who will take the time to listen to your concerns. You are mom and you know your children better than he does.
I had a little one who had true colic and she would cry every night and I would literally put her in the car seat and drive around for hours (sometimes up to 3) to calm her down.

Hello R., oh yes I would change his milk and also go talk to your drugest and see if he suggest anything good for the colic.. also get you some mylecon drops and use them religiously..when my children were babies and we did everything to get rid of the colic and nothing helped well then we went the old fashion way... here goes..you put a little whiskey in with some very warm water and sugar and give it to them...it really does work and they sleep so good after they pass all that gas and man do they pass it! also get you some dark kayro syrup and start putting it in all of his bottles...just about a teaspoon or so and also another thing is to make him a bottle of very warm water with the Karo, the reason for the dark is so you can see how much you have in the bottle, it should change the water to alittle dark and shake it up really good and give it to him...the warm water will help him pass the gas and the karo gives it some sweetness but it keeps babies from getting constipated..I swear by it and it also helps to get babies to sleep through the night. Instead of giving them milk at night you give them the karo water and it will stop them from wanting to eat at night. babies will keep waking up to eat at night as long as they are getting food but the water makes them think they are getting full but they are not and then they start to sleep longer and longer but please try the warm water and karo and let me know how it works. good luck sweetie, D.

Always listen to your instincts. If your doc is blowing you off, then I'd suggest a second opinion, or a new doc all together. It's discouraging to hear so many stories of people who don't feel listened to by the very ones who are supposed to be caring for their children's health. Don't let him minimalize your concerns. Doctors are not always right. As far as the gas and colic go, if it's not the formula, which it may be, it may be one of those things that your little one will have to grow out of. My daughter was that way at first too, but by 3 months she mellowed out, and now at a year she is the sweetest, most laid back baby in the world. But once again, if you feel that something else is going on, keep being proactive until you get a satisfactory explanation. Best of luck to you.

Ok R.~
I'm gonna tell ya a secret..that I think every doctor should divulge....This worked wonders for my Twin Son who was soooo unhappy. It is called Gripe Water (or Fussy water). It can be gotten over the counter in a pharmacy.... or a health food store.
This was a tremendous help to me. It has chamomile in it~I know, but I can't remember what else. It costed me about 8$ a bottle....but I would have paid 20$!!!
It works along the same line as gas drops, but without constipating them. It is just supposed to have some soothing affect on the stomach.
He SLEPT sooo much better!!!
Hope this helps..and if it does make sure to tell other poor souls that have been in our shoes!
Smiles,
T.

Hi R.! I had some problems with my son also who is now 12 weeks. We tried several formulas and now we are on Alimentum and Zantac. Everything seems to be alot better. He is a totally different baby. Alimentum or Nutrimagen is a HypoAllergenic formula that is kind of expensive but it works. I recently found out that if the formula is a medical necessity some insurances cover it. We have Cigna and they do cover the formula at 100%. Good luck and I hope everything is working out for you and your family.

Hey. I know what you are going through. My oldest had reflux and we didn't find out till he was 3months old. I had to change doctor to even find out what was wrong with him. But we ended up on nutramgen milk. I know I probably didn't spell it right but its close. She also had him on 3 different types meds. The zantac, mylanta and tagament. He had to take them every 6 hrs. I don't know if they would try them on him but it seem to to help my son. I hope everything works out for you.

This is my advice..listen to YOUR mommy instincts. You know better than anyone if it's the milk that's causing problems. And I don't feel like you have to have permission from the ped before you change formula's. They are ALL made for babies right? So, I would switch to a soy formula and see if that helps. I switched my son to soy, that didn't help, so then I tried the lactose free kind, which worked wonders. The mylacon drops other mothers have mentioned did great for my son too. Also, I would FOR SURE switch to a ped. that is going to listen to your concerns!! Who wants a Dr that is just going to brush you off??? Try switching the formula, and give him some mylacon drops right before he eats, so maybe you can PREVENT gas. Also, the "vent flow" bottles worked wonderfully on helping to prevent gas with my son, so you might want to try those too. Hope this helps

Get the book, "The Happiest Baby on the Block". My baby didn't have colic but when he got fussy we used the techniques in the book and he would calm down. It's a great book!

Two of my three kids had bad gas...with my 5 year old (at 3-4 weeks old) we kept changing formula and then put him on lactose free and that seemed to help him. My second son, he had it bad enough to try reflux medicine but then we put him on Nestle Good Start with Comfort Proteins and it cleared him up in a day! With my third, I started her on Good Start and she never had any problems! That's what I would try first....but also I read where they are using that acidopholus (like the good bacteria in yogurt) to treat colic. You can buy it from the pharmacist without a prescription, but I don't know how much you would give your baby. But you would just sprinkle some in his milk. Ask your doctor about that, but find a new doctor if your's isn't helping. I had heard somewhere that Dr. Sears says that colic is when a doctor doesn't know what is wrong. So I found this on his website and some of this might help get you through.

http://www.askdrsears.com/html/5/t051300.asp

But first, change his formula!
