I am really struggling with depression and thinking that it may be time to consult with a psychiatrist about medication. Has anyone used a dr. in the area that you would recommend? What about a counselor?

Good morning, L.. You will probably get more advice than you can handle, but I know what you're going through. I was so extremely depressed for a very long time. I saw my doctor who put me on Zoloft which took the edge off, but the main thing was to keep in touch with people and be very open about how you are feeling. That is so important. My doctor is in Coppell (Dr. Lisa MArtin) and she is the easiest person to talk to and to deal with. It feels like you're actually talking to a person....not just a doctor. She is AMAZING!!!! She is at the Tienna Health facility on Moore Street ###-###-####, call & see what she can do for you. Feel free to e-mail me at any time.

Hello L.. I went through a severe depression after my son was born, it can be very difficult. I also would recomend starting with your OB or family doctor. You should consider having your thyroid checked because pregnancy can do all sorts of crazy hormonal things to our bodies, even long after our babies are born. However I would like to add one thing that no one has mentioned yet. The thing that helped me the most learning to take care of myself in small and simple ways. Nutrition played a huge factor in helping me feel better. I stopped eating processed foods and increased my protein and veggie intake and eliminated dairy. I also started on a simple vitamin routine (different than my prenatals) which included B-vitamins and Omega 3's. The people at Whole Foods were really good about directing me towards good quality vitamins at an affordable price. I would also recommend walking if you can, not to focus on the exercise or weight loss, but just to get out and clear your head. Once I improved my eating and nutrition I felt much better in about a week, which in turn helped me with the meds and counseling. Don't hesitate to email me if you need someone to talk to!

It depends if your depression is chemical or from life events. You might try talking with your family Doc, he may put you on an anti depressor med & see if that helps. I have been taking Prozac & recently they increased it. It has made a world of difference for me. The first medication they try may not be the right one or the right dose. It could be a combition of drugs & counseling that you need. Important thing is you don't have to feel this way. For some people it's brain chemistry. Good thing is that you are asking for help. I feel the same way but in my case I have no insurance and don't know what to do. I have had anxiety/depression got a while now..

I would suggest going to your OB and go from there. Your OB should get you a referral for a Psychiatrist.

Call your OB, she can start you on meds and refer you to more help if needed. That way your insurance pays for it.

I started with my general practitioner who prescribed some medication for me. You might start there also and if it seems to be more of a severe case they can refer you to someone.

Hi L.,

I went to my general practitioner and my OB. Both are good resources and would be able to help you out. If you have a doctor you feel comfortable with , I would suggest you start with him/her.

Good luck!

Hi L. -
I feel your pain. I've dealt with anxiety and depression on and off for quite some time now. I saw a counselor while I lived in Chicago and also Houston. I went through Post-partum depression and anxiety when I had my son in 2005; my OB prescribed me Zoloft (50 mg) - that coupled with counseling, exercise and a lot of prayer, I felt much better. However, this past winter I had an anxiety relapse - my general practioner prescribed me Zoloft again. I also purchased Lucinda Bassett's "Attacking Anxiety and Depression" program - go to www.stresscenter.com - it's a great resource. Again, exercise has also helped me a great deal.

If your doctor (OB or general practioner) prescribes you Zoloft, it will take a couple of weeks to start kicking in, but for me it works great.

Through my struggles with depression and anxiety, I've learned that (for me, at least), part of it is truly chemical (brain doesn't produce enough seretonin); the other part of it is anger turned inward and issues that are unresolved. I would also suggest journaling - writing down your thoughts, feelings, what's eating you up inside. Prayer also works wonders.

Feel freel to e-mail me anytime. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon.
