Help! 2Yr Old Unbuckles 5 Pt Harness on Carseat!!!

My son is Houdini and can get out of his 5 pt graco harness. He can unbuckle both the plastic top chest clip and the buckle at the bottom (he can buckle himself back in too!). I have tried tying a piece of cloth around the straps, but he works it down so that he can squeeze out of the top and stand up and get out (while I am driving!) Are there any other clips or other safety straps that anyone knows about?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Boy is my son MAD!!!! I took the whole five point harness apart and re-strung it with the clip, the puzzle like buckle and even the part that you clip it into at the bottom...all backwards. He was so mad and screamed. I was so smug! I felt like I had just won the lottery! I no longer have to be afraid of him going through the windshield or walking around the back of the van while I am driving!!!! Ha Ha ha ha ha! Am sure he will figure it out soon so I have to enjoy my victory now!

I don't know if this will help or not, but for my middle son, I had to turn the lower buckle BACKWARDS. I turned it to where the button that you push to undo it, was turned TOWARD my son instead of to the outside. It was hard for me to undo it. He eventually figured that out too but it worked for a while. Good luck!

My oldest son did this, we just turned everything backwards, he hated it and threw a fit, but eventually he got the hang of it too. But he wanted a "big boy" seat like his cousin and friend, so i bought him one, but he is big for his age not only in weight but in height also. Now my problem is keeping him in a seat belt, he did really well at first but just for the last 2 weeks, ive been having problems with that. Good Luck!!

Does anyone else think maybe the answer is teaching him its wrong to do that and giving him a punishment? HE seems almost too smart for his own good on this one mom, maybe the answer is to not stall him figuring it out again, cause he will, but punish him as severely as you can or feel comfortable with for getting out of his carseat! That is very dangerous.... maybe stopping a fun trip and going home cause he was unbuckled? or a good long time out and of course instantly chastizing him if he get out!

My daughter did the same thing she is three now. All she wanted was a big girl booster seat. If the weight is an issue you know being to small to fit then go back to yhe big ones that has the big rest that you pull down over the top of them

my 3yr. old is doing the same exact thing!!! I have not found anything that works yet. Boy is it scary when they can get out like that while you are driving. Mine got out, took his shoe off and threw it at me while I was driving!!!

You find something that works, please let me know and vise versa.

best of luck to you,

L

My son is nearly 3 and he's always been a Houdini as well. A Houdini with ADHD also. He climbed out of cribs, playpens, everything. I bought a pretty pricey car seat where the button to open it is all the way down by his feet. And plus when he sits in it the cloth covering slides down over it adding extra protection from him trying to get it open any other way. In addition the button's pretty hard for me to push. Haha. But it's worth it to keep him safely in his seat.

Here's a link to a seat nearly exactly like the one I have. It's just different colors. I would recommend it to anyone with a sitless child.
