Help! 21 Month Old Biting

Updated on July 09, 2010

My son is 21 months old and has started biting when he is mad. He has broken the skin on my arm twice in the past 2 weeks from this. He has all his teeth except the very back molars so I do not feel like it is from teething and he is definitely doing it when he is frustrated. He is not talking yet but he definitely understands when I tell him no. Any suggestions on how to handle this/discipline him?

What can I do next?

I guess this is pretty horrible, but I was a biter. The only thing that stopped me was being bitten back by an adult or parent. It hurt. It wasn't hard enough to break my skin, but I was in tears. My parents tried all the tricks- lemon juice, vinegar, soap, time outs, spanking, etc....but it all failed. I am not telling you to bite your child. I am just saying I don't have a great "what works" answer that isn't totally off the wall.

My nephew used to bite my daughter all the time. Can't remember who told me but I gave him cocoa powder once right after he bit her and he never did it again. I put a bit on a baby spoon. And actually still use it with my 5 year old. It actually works better than a time out for her.

yes, you need to stop this. biting from aggression is very understandable in pre-articulate people, but that doesn't make it acceptable. a big NO when he does it, followed by immediate removal of yourself from his company, is the best and most clear statement you can make. ideally you walk away from him and don't interact with him for several minutes (no word, no eye contact, nothing.) if that's not possible, pick him up and pop him somewhere safe and then deny him your attention, eg in a playpen.
you will inevitably get advice to bite him back, or to hit him when he does this. do not. aggression does not cure aggression. being denied your attention is the best negative consequence.

My doctor told me to get lemon juice and squirt a little in my daughter's mouth. I did, and she liked it so I used lime juice. Vinegar also does wonders!
