Helicopter Toy for Little Kids

Mamas & Papas-

DS (4 y.o.) asked for a purple helicopter for Christmas. We got him a flying ball one. http://www.amazon.com/ROBOTIC-3-Channel-Flying-Ball-Helic... It lasted about two days. The replacement died in less than 4 hours of play. Any thoughts on what remote controlled helicopter/ aeroplane we might buy that can hold up to a little boy? It should be safe for indoor play.

Thanks for your advice.

Tell them that helicopters are for older kids and when they get old enough they can have one. Otherwise buy them age appropriate toys.

This toy is for older kids. It says so on the box. A 4 year old can't possibly manage the remote control for this toy. Even if he is a genius and manages it great even 1 bump can break it.

Perhaps try one that isn't recommended for five years and up when your child is four. Adults break these because they are hard to control, a four year old doesn't stand a chance. It isn't the helicopter that is the problem.

First, they aren't meant for 4 year olds. The reviews even say they aren't for young kids. My boys were 10 when they got theirs. You have to learn how to adjust the trim and manage the remote. Many of the parts are cheap and easily replacable once you figure them out. My now-13 year old can land his anywhere and sometimes uses it to play with the cat (the cat will chase it). They hold up fine to a crash into a wall or from the ceiling to the floor. They aren't meant to go much further than around a room.

Also, these little helicopters aren't meant for outdoor play at all. They're too touchy and every little gust affects them. They're for flying inside.

I wouldn't buy a remote controlled plane or helicopter for a 4 year old. I'd buy RC cars or trucks so he can work on his skills with the remote on the ground. I know that's not what you're asking, but I do have 2 boys (12 and 13 years old) and that's what I did.

We have the flying toy you link too - it is a lot of fun but for an older child. My son got it when he was 8 and it is fairly delicate. There are some replacement parts included. I think 4 is just too young.

When DS was 4 he had a purple velvet helicopter that was nice and sturdy. If you like, I can look for it to see if it has any identifying marks. Not remote control but much better for the age.

Quality remote control "toys" are really made for older kids.
I'm sure your little guy loves these but they really aren't durable enough for preschoolers!

None. Flying objects break easily.

How about a nice book on paper airplanes? (Sorry)

Both my husband and son have gone through several toy helicopters. We have tried cheap and expensive, all different brands. And non of them have lasted very long. Many have been returned, exchanged or repaired (probably how my nine year old learned to solder wires. :) ) So I doubt you will find what you are looking for. Please let us know if you come across something!!

Last night my kiddo was playing with a balloon helicopter. NOt what you are looking for, I know, but my son was laughing saying they last longer and were just as much fun as the remote control toys. http://www.amazon.com/Kids-Balloon-Helicopter-1-Dozen/dp/...

My now 12 yr old has had nooooooooooo luck with any of his helicopters over the years!! And he plays pretty carefully with them. Most recently, he got one for his birthday, took it outside on a nice calm day, it got up about 10ft in the air and the remote would not work any more and it just flew away. The store actually gave us a replacement and the same thing happened when he let the neighbor fly it! I am not sure if maybe the real expensive ones would be better, but I am not willing to spend the big bucks yet. Looking forward to your replies.........

Unfortunately, we have not found any that hold up to any age. My son loved frying helicopters. We bought all kids, including the airhogs. Stupid things break as soon as it lands wrong. They are light so good indoors but do not last. One time my husband even bought one that retails at $50 and it stopped responding to charge and remote within the first week.

Our boys (4, 6, & 9) got these for Christmas...

They don't fly them perfectly, but neither can I. We take them outside to a grassy area and just let them fly them--trial & error. They LOVE them--don't worry about the suggested age too much.
