I don't know anything about the after effects of the IUD. I do know that abnormally heavy periods are not common. There are quite a few reasons your period could he heavier than normal this month. If it's the same next month you should def. call the gyn. Track it for reference should you need to consult with your doc on it. I can't imagine that they would stay heavy due only to the IUD removal.

Hi S.,

I've had my Mirena for just over a year, and my periods are heavier than before I had the IUD put in (not to mention inconsistent). My doctor doesn't seem concerned, but needless to say, I'm getting a second opinion. go with your gut, if you don't feel this is normal for you, check with a doctor.

Good luck!

HI S.! Since I'm planning to have my Mirena (don't know if that is what you have or not) I was looking at various message boards. I happened on this one -->

I think it is from the UK but helpful in some respects since you can possibly find someone in your shoes there. I'm sure your body will settle down soon...might want to up your iron intake. I get anemic and I know how (literally! ) draining that is! Good luck

I don't know about IUDs but I was on Depo for 4 1/2 years (no period) and had the essure procedure. The first couple of periods I had I thought were pretty heavy! I have had 4 and they have calmed down some. I sure didn't miss this!!!! Good luck!

I don't personally have any experience with IUD's. I have heard that the IUD's that are used today are better than the IUD's from the '70's.

It does not surprise me that you are having an extremely heavy period since it has been 2 years since you had a period. I think that is probably common. However, I am surprised that the doctor would not tell you to expect an unusually heavy period. I would think that they would want to monitor you and make sure that you do not become anemic. I know that I had a lot of heavy bleeding after my son was born and had to take iron tablets for a while. I would definately call your doctor and if nothing else talk with a nurse.
I know that it is inconvenient. When I was younger I had heavy periods that would last for about 7-10 days. As I have gotten older they are not so heavy and usually only last 2-3 days. Good luck - hang in there - definately let the doctor know what is going on.
