I have done this, in fact I used to do this every year at thanksgiving lol. I put my ham in flat side down and always put beer in with it! Never had a problem!! Good luck!
Hello, I have heard that you can heat a ham in a crockpot but I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried it. I have a larger crockpot (the big oval one) and I think the ham will fit in there. We are finally getting together with family on Sunday and I'll have other things to put in the oven. Any success stories? How did you do it? I'd love to heat it without it losing all it's juices but I don't even know if that is possible.
Thanks,
M.
And so it begins. Family is FINALLY coming over tomorrow for our Christmas celebration together. MIL brought the ham to me, only wants me to heat if for 1 hour, FIL hates it when the ham is dry. SIL hates the cold ham and cranks about that. I said something to the MIL about trying the crockpot and her response "why in the world would you do that?"
Oui. Next year we are going to Denny's !!!

I have done it...in a similar type of crock pot. I put it flat side down, threw in pinapple (and the juice mixed with a beer and some brown sugar whisked together). The lid has to fit tight! I let it go on low for a few hours til heated through.
It was not the BEST ham I ever did, but I was feeding the 'masses' at X mas, and it was fine (my kiddos are gourmands as opposed to gourmets, so they ate it down to the bone!).
Good luck!
***the few remnants are now pea soup***
I think the whole point of a crockpot is so the juices stay in - vs. roasting something in a conventional oven. I would think this would work fine for your purposes. I'd put some liquid in there too (just water, unless you are using some kind of sauce with it) but the fat in the ham will help and mix in. As you know, crackpots take a long time to heat through, so you really have to allow enough time. I can't estimate the time without knowing the number of pounds of ham you have, but usually you have a lot of flexibility - going "over" in time doesn't have any adverse effect on the dish.
My crockpot cookbook says to put a trivet or metal rack in the bottom (if you have a cooling rack for cookies, that will work, if the crockpot didn't come with one - it's okay if it's round and the crockpot is oval). The recipe says a 5-7 pound fully cooked ham, with or without the bone should cook for 5-6 hours on low. Remove it, pour off the juices, remove the skin and fat. Score the ham and stud with whole cloves. In a small saucepan, melt 1/2 cup currant jelly with 1 tablespoon of vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard (you could do prepared mustard too, probably 3-4 times that amount), and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Remove the metal rack/trivet (carefully - it will stay hot), return the hame to the crockpot and spoon the sauce over, then cover and cook on high 20-30 minutes, brushing with the sauce a few times.
Hope that helps!
Yes, I do this. I usually put the ham in and cover it with honey. I then throw a can of crushed pineapple with the juice and a can of pineapple rings in the crockpot. It comes out fine.
M.,
Yes, you can do this. DO NOT remove the lid until you are READY TO SERVE...that's how you keep it juicy.
Make sure you have your marinade (Heinz 57 sauce, honey and pineapple (crushed, chunks or rings!!) mixed together) brown sugar and maple syrup (mixed) are some good marinades.
Set it on low and let it go...ENJOY!
I have a very small oven so my crockpot works great for this. I put it in with about 2 cups of apple cider. It cooks great and never a problem
I would *think* that as long as the ham isn't CRAMMED in there--should be fine. Great way to free up your oven!
The thing with a crock pot is every time the lid is off the environment is gone inside the crock. It takes 15-30 minutes to get back to the temp and get the food cooking/heating up again so if you do this you must leave the lid on the entire time required.
