I'm 22 weeks pregnant and I get horrible heartburn! Sometimes it feels like bubbles in my chest. Yuck! I take Zantac OTC and have for over a month, yet I'm still eating tums like they are candy! I don't drink soda or coffee mostly water and the occasional sweet tea. Even now it's 130am and I can't sleep because of it! I haven't slept in bed with my husband but a few times my whole pregnancy :( So any suggestions as to what helped with your heartburn?
Added: I try drinking milk and eating cracker with no releif:(

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

YES honestly i should buy stock in tums! And I don't eat many sweets, and when I do its ice-cream or gelato but that's only 2 times a week.
@mommalucky I sleep on my couch and have almost the entire pregnancy :( my dr is aware as he's the one who said to take Zantac...and food wise I try and stay away from mexican which is hard cause it's my fave!

When Tums quit working for me, I would make some ginger water (powdered ginger, water, sweetener) and drink that. I made mine in a shaker, since the ginger tends to settle at the bottom quickly. Good luck!

I ate Tums.
Stayed away from anything spicy at that time even though everything gave me heartburn.
It should pass.
I, also, slept evevated sometimes w/extra pillows behind my back and/or slept on the recliner.
I would put in a call to your doctor.
Good luck. :(

I don't know what heartburn meds are allowed when pregnant now. When I was having kids they didn't even allow rolaids or tums.

The only thing that worked for me (and I remember the exact feeling you describe all these years later) was to drink ice cold water. Sometimes I would take a big drink of it when the heartburn "hit" and would get relief, but sipping it kept it at bay. The water had to be ice cold though...more ice than water. Now I can't drink ice water...can't stand it. I drink lots of water, but it has to be at room temperature or warmer. I think it's because I associate the ice cold water with that awful (and awful tasting) pregnancy heartburn.

I've heard that Tums can make it worse in some women. Lemon juice, though acidic, does something to create a more alkaline environment in the stomach, so it actually counteracts stomach acid somehow. Try it in water - and use real lemon juice, not the processed stuff. You can by frozen lemon juice in the same freezer section as orange juice. Watch the tea but try ginger tea. And of course, eat more small meals and no big meals.

I get heartburn anyway, so it was worse when I was pregnant. I take Pepcid, so there wasn't anything my doctor could do in addition to that except recommend I buy stock in Tums!

My OB told me that as you get closer to term all the muscles and ligaments in your body are loosening up in preparation for childbirth. This includes the muscles around the stomach, so that's why acid can slip out. It sucks!

Sometimes eating a small meal helped me when it was really bad. Also, elevating on pillows. Wish I could be more helpful!

I would definitely recommend you stay away for lemon juice, orange juice, etc. I also get kidney stones, and my urologist wants me to drink 4 oz of lemon juice a day. It is so hard for me to do that, as it makes my heartburn so much worse!!!

Find out what, if any, foods help you and just do what works. Good luck!

have you tried apples? My hubby has complained of it in the past and when he eats apples with me after dinner, his heartburn seems to subside. I ate them the whole time i was preggers and I didnt have heartburn once.

Not sure, but if you are consuming any kind of peppermint, stop. It can exacerbate heartburn. I would get the beginnings of heartburn symptoms just from eating a mint oreo cookie.
So if you chew gum and it's peppermint, pick a new flavor. If you suck mints to help with nausea, find an alternative.
A CNA told me that when I got a bad case of heartburn for the first time (around age 39). I'd never had it before and the accompanying symptoms were so bad I felt ill for a solid week. Weak, headaches, thought I was having a heart attack even. Nope. Just heartburn. :( ugh.

Avoid anything that contains mint. Not just the "obvious" no-no's like spicy or greasy foods.

Ultimate aloe. All natural and safe for baby. I added a link so you can check it out. It will get rid of the heartburn for sure. Couple of ounces a day.
