I was wondering if anyone has any tried and true methods for getting rid of heartburn? I am due with my second baby in December and I am having awful heartburn lately. All I have tried so far is TUMS and they seem to work but not all that well. I have a doctor's appoinment this Thursday so I was looking for something to get me by until then. Thanks Ladies!

What can I do next?

I take Zantac. I am due next week and have been taking them since my 4th month. I originally started off with the 75mg but I have moved up to the 150 because it was getting worse. I was given the ok by my doctor. It works quickly. Sometimes I take it before I eat or while I am eating it just depends. But I am only allowed two per day so use them sparingly. I have never had to use more than one on any particular day. It seems to last the entire day. Hopefully this helps you.

Chocolate milk worked so well for me! I had it pretty bad with my first, and then with my second, I felt like I was breathing fire! One of my friends told me she drank it when she was pregnant and it helped right away, and she was totally right. Good luck!

Tums dont work that well for me eaither. I've tried a few things that help, one is drink a glass of milk. Also eating something mild like bread can help break up the acidity. and ultimately, its best to watch what you eat for a bit, anything spicy or acidic like certain fruits or tomatoes/tomato sauce always sets me off, i cant eat bananas at all. so a solution is perhaps to eat fairly bland stuff until december. oatmeal, bread, cereal, etc.

Hi K.,

I market a product for people who care about their health and worry that their family doesn't eat as well as they could, like I used to. Then I found this product that puts fruits and vegetables into capsules for adults and gummy treats for kids. Now I don't worry anymore because I know our nutritional bases are covered. I liked it so much I decided to go into business for myself so I could make it available to other people.

One of the unexpected bonuses our family exprienced was that my husband and I no longer suffer from heartburn or indigestion. We used to buy the large economy size bottle of Tums at Costco and since we've been using this product, we no longer use Tums at all. The product has been tested on pregnant women with outstanding results.

Let me know if you would like more information or if you know anyone who would like to know about a product like that.

Blessings,

M.

Ask your doctor about Nexium...this saved me during my second and third pregnancies. The only thing is, you need to stop it at least 7-10 days before delivery or your milk will not come in as quickly. It cannot be taken while breastfeeding, but by then you should be over the heartburn altogether. good Luck!

You may want to try Slippery Elm lozenges. Its what the professional singers use to coat the throat for stressed vocal cords...it should be something your doctor will approve. Celery stalks may help absorb some of that acid...reason they put it in a bloody mary, right? Never let your stomach get completely empty, eat frequent meals, and stay upright at least 30 minutes after eating. Avoid, fried and tomato paste foods.
I had heart burn with my son and it was awful...good luck.

I took Pepcid AC throughout my second pregnancy...works great! I had it so bad I would have to sleep in an upright position, but Pepcid worked well for me. Also, I couldn't eat tomato sauce products like spaghetti sauce or high sugar/fried foods. Try to cut those things out of your diet and see if that helps too! I know how miserable it is, hope you feel better soon!

When I got heartburn really bad with my pregnancies, I drank milk, used Zantac and laying on my left side seemed to help when it got really bad. Not sure why it worked, but it did. Congrats on your baby!

Hey K.. You might ask your doctor before you try this because you're pregnant, but I suffer with heartburn and instead of taking something every day, you can drink aloe vera juice. It heals your stomach and espghagus. It should be ok for you because it's all natural, but I would probably check first just to be safe. Good luck. Trust me, I feel your pain! Hope it helps. It was disgusting, but I was swigging Gaviscon by the end of each pregnancy. Actually, my first - I thought I had acid reflux disease before I found out I was preggo! Gaviscon worked well for me and was recommended by my OB.
Good luck!

When I was pregnant with my first child, I had heartburn from about 6mos. up until I delivered him. The saying was true, he came out with a full head of hair. The only thing that releaved me was milk. I went through almost 2 gallons a week. I would bring my own milk with me if we went to friends houses' for dinner. I didn't like taking medicine if I absolutely didn't have to. I knew that certain things were going to trigger the heartburn, but after a while it go to the point where even bread would give it to me.
Good luck.

Hi K.,

I had tried everything to ease my heartburn and acid reflux but the only thing that made ANY difference was Zantac. I took it 2x a day from the middle of my 2nd trimester through birth. As one other mama mentioned it didn't go a way completely, so on occasion I had to chew a few tums (I recommend quick dissolve!). Good luck and congratulations on baby 2!

I am in the same boat right now, I am acutally due in Nov. with my 2nd and heartburn is killing me. But not like it did with my first, my OB gave me a script for Protonix during my 1st and it worked GREAT! you may want to ask about that. I was on a different insurance with my first and they covered Protonix and this time I am not to sure I really haven't gotten to that point in this pregnancy like I did with the first. Sorry about the babbling. Protonix, Zantac, tums, milk, ice cream, dairy.

Congrats!

I second the Zantac response. I used it during my pregnancy, and it worked pretty well and best of all, no chalky taste like TUMS.

I found that Mylanta worked great for heartburn "episodes" during pregnancy. I was also on daily prescription Protonix from the doctor. You may want to ask about that at your next appointment.

I got heartburn with both pregnancies. My hubby would either make me a chocolate milkshake or I would eat a banana and drink a glass of milk to get rid of it. It always worked for me, so you might give it a shot.

Hi,

When I was pregnant, my doctor told me to chew gum. It produces saliva which in turn speeds up digestion. It worked for me plus it tastes much better than TUMS. I also heard bananas work too.

Good luck,

I just had twins 5 months ago and I had terrible heartburn through my pregnancy. My doctor recommended Prilosec OTC and he also prescribed medications that were once/day and it took care of my heartburn. That was my WORST symptom it was so uncomfortable. I hope it works for you as well as it did for me. Best of luck with your upcoming addition!

I took Zantac twice a day throughout the second and third trimesters when I was pregnant. It didn't make it go away entirely, but it made it a lot more bearable. Hope that helps!

Hi there, I had 3 kids all 21 months apart the oldest is 4 and 1/2 and the youngest is now 13 months. I had THE WORST heart burn during all 3 pregnancys the last was so bad I never ate anything and if I did I threw it up because of the acid and I only gained 10 pounds the entire time and my baby was 8 lbs and 12 oz.
ANY WAY, yada yada... My Dr. told me to Take 2 zantac 75's (or 1 150)I actually bought the SAMS store brand acid reducer. Its the same thing as the zantac but MUCH cheaper and that worked great. I took them every morning AND I found that sucking on peppermints helped A TON. I had a hole bag of them in my purse at all times. I really found that if I missed my dose of zantac I could really tell the difference.

Also, Eat several small meals and don't lie down after eating and chew your food much longer than you normaly would.

hope that helps... The acid reflux heart burn was the worst thing ever for me. So I really know how you feel...
HUGS, AJ

I hate to be a downer but I had terrible heart burn with my first. I mean I had to sleep(when I actually could) sitting up and I kept a glass of ice chips next to me during the night to ease the burn of the acid reflux I was experiencing as well. The doctor gave me anti-acids, but really the only thing that helped was delivery and let me tell you it was INSTANT! I went from being in some real pain from it to just instantly being heartburn free! I hope you find something that helps!

ETA: Milk did provide some temporary relief but it was very short relief.
