Healthy Breakfast

I would like some advice/support regarding a healthy breakfast for my 4 year-old. My son is a picky eater,(just like most other kids his age), but my DH and I really try to limit his intake of sugar and junk foods. The problem is breakfast. H won't eat the traditional cereal for breakfast. He just waits until it gets soggy, and then drinks the milk from the bowl.

He does like the yogurt smoothies that you buy at the grocery store, and the different granola bars. Because I know the kids versions of these foods are full of sugar, I buy DanActive yogurt smoothies, and I look at the nutrition labels on the granola bars. Most of them don't offer any nutritional value at all, but there are a few that do: Special K; Fiber 1; All-Bran, and most any of the protien bars in the diet sections of the store.

The problem is my husband has labeled these as "diet" and "adult" foods, and feel that they are not giving our son the nutrition HE needs. Does any one have any thoughts on this? I really want to give my son what is best for him, and thought that I was.

Thanks so much for your help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded. I did find a wonderful website (www.mypyramid.gov) which breaks down how much of the food groups children need by age. This helped me recognize that some of the bars are WAY TOO HIGH in protein for his age, (I can break them in half and they are fine), but other than that, these seem to be healthy, quick alternatives for breakfast.

Thanks again for all of your responses.

There's a brand of frozen pancakes/ waffles they sell at Walmart called Dr. Waffelbakkers. They're all organic and/or whole grain type choices and are not any more expensive than other frozen brands. We've tried the flaxseed sweet potato pancakes, organic whole grain blueberry pancakes and flaxseed cinnamon waffles. (all yummy!)

If you're a busy or working mom- these are fast, healthy, yummy and won't break the bank. Something to try.

Quaker Granola bars don't have anymore sugar than cereal and lots of fiber because of the oatmeal they are made with. My son loves the chewy ones. He is a very picky eater, also. I don't limit him to only breakfast foods for breakfast because he is so picky and there are so few choices for him. I treat it like any other meal and let him eat what he wants as long as it is somewhat healthy. Sometimes he has Triscuits and cheese or pretzels with peanutbutter. My son loves cinnamon toast. I bake a slice of whole wheat bread in the oven with Promise spread and a little sprinkle of cinnamon sugar mix on top. He loves it! Good luck!

I am very picky on breakfast--it will truly make or break your child's school day.
I always make sure there is a protein and good carb along with fruit and occasional veggies.
Here's some samples:
-McCain Irish Oatmeal (steel cut oats) with REAL maple syrup, walnuts and dried cranberries (this one is my standard breakfast!)
-Whole grain french toast (uses cinnamon, milk and egg for dip) with again REAL maple syrup
-Frittatas (baked omlet) with variety of veggies and cheese-favorite with my kids is baby spinach, goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes
-Bacon and scrambled eggs (make sure bacon is organic since most 'bad' stuff resides in the fat
-Peanut butter and banana on whole grain toast
-sweet potato pancakes with REAL maple syrup (I know I am beating a dead horse on the syrup but fake maple syrup is loaded with super bad stuff)
-omlets with veggies and cheese
-egg muffin sandwiches--broil english muffins with egg, cheese, spinach and type of meat
-chicken sausage with whole grain waffles and yep REAL maple syrup

All these I like to include a seasonal fruit--right now grapefruit or oranges.

The smoothies are great too--we make ours with fat free milk, yogurt, frozen fruit and protein powder.

My girls are older than your son and I have learned they do much better on tests, listening, etc. when they have some complex carbs and good protein.

I kinda agree with your husband and kinda don't. Most of the bars in the diet section for adults are fine for kids but either don't taste that good or don't have anything nutritionally in them.
I would love to get you some samples of some products that I have available through my website. The company that makes them owns and operates their own certified organic fields. Their products are amazing. The product line that would perfectly fit your needs is called Simply Nutrilite.
I copied the description of one of the bars below:

Your day is crazy and you’re super busy. But you can’t just skip eating. Why?

1. Mom told you never to miss a meal – oops, too late! OK, let’s move on to number two.
2. You need energy so you’re not dragging through the day.
3. Those bad-for-you snacks from the vending machine only add empty calories.

If you’re short on time, grab a Simply Nutrilite bar and go. Perfect for snacking, it's better for you than chips or a candy bar and tastes just as good. Each bar is packed with omega 3s and antioxidants. The soft Cherry Almond bar tastes like a sweet almond cookie with real cherries, oats, and a crispy rice crunch. And it’s topped with a drizzle of vanilla icing. Yum! Give yourself the nanosecond it takes to tear open a Simply Nutrilite bar. Your body will thank you … and Mom would be proud.

Sorry for such a long email but these products are exactly what you are looking for. Call me and I can bring you some samples.

Nutripals balanced bars are better nutritious choices. My 3 year old however prefers my pria protein bars, and other bars I buy. I freeze the go-gurt yogurts so they turn like ice-cream consistency, and when we are in a hurry in the morning, that's what my 6 year old son grabs for breakfast. Does he like fruit? How about oatmeal? you can get the quaker oatmeal instant packs with 'dinosaur eggs' that sometimes helps them. It's kind of hard with breakfast I know. I agree most of the 'granola' bars are just full of sugar and no nutritional value. We've been really watching our sugar intake at home lately as well. But, I also think the 'bars' are pretty much the same as far as if it's ok for a kid to eat one marketed towards adults, just check the labels for all regarding sugar and cholesterol, that's what we watch the most. Also, when I leave the gym and stop to get a smoothie, my youngest kids are usually with me (they stay in the kids club), and I let them get a smoothie and I always order all of ours without sugar. They don't know the difference. McDonalds has a great fruit and yogurt parfait with granola you can put on top if you want, and my 3 year old LOVES them as well. You can do whole weat pancakes with sugar free syrup, scrambled eggs with 2-3 eggs whites and one whole egg, turkey bacon and whole wheat toast. You can even toast whole wheat bread and add a tsp. of peanut butter instead of jelly. My kids love this as a snack even. There are options, you just have to find a few your son will actually eat. I know where you're coming from with a 'picky' eater, I've got a couple of those myself. Good Luck! :-)

What about oatmeal? That is personally my favorite healthy breakfast, but not everybody likes it. Breakfast is tricky, because there are so many sugary options. You could try whole grain waffles with peanut butter and fruit. My three year old likes Owen's breakfast croissants with egg, cheese and sausage or ham.

One option would be eggs, you can obviously scamble them w/low fat ham/cheese, I don't know if he'll eat veggies in them I have a 5yr old girl and she won't eat the veggies cooked very often so I always cut the peppers and put them next to the eggs. Another option is eggo nutrigrain waffles, they come in diff. flavors and u can get them in lowfat. I toast them and then I buy bags of frozen fruit such as blueberries cherries and strawberries, and I will warm a bowl of them in the microwave and then pour them over her waffles and lightly sprinkle them with sweetner. Works just like syrup and she loves it. Then you can use that fruit to make your own, much healthier smoothie. I use fat free milk, a low sugar yogurt, handful of mixed frozen fruit(freeze your old bananas they work great in smoothies) and a little bit of orange juice and blend it to make a delicious smoothie! Whole grain toast w/peanut butter is good, or oatmeal w/raisins in it, or pecans, and I let her put them in the oatmeal herself so she feels like she's doing something, I also allow her to crack the eggs into the bowl or pan if you feel safe to do that. Anything you can give them to do they'll tend to eat more easily since they made it. Hope these suggestions help!!

Our preschool-aged daughter has an almost "standard" breakfast these days that is both nutritious and quite filling and she LOVES it. Maybe this or something similar will work for your son. She eats a Thomas Light Multigrain English muffin (8g of fiber - I eat one too!) with reduced fat peanut butter on it and raisins in the peanut butter. She usually has some sort of fruit with it too, but not always - a clementine, some strawberries or blueberries (her favorite and you don't get any more healthy than berries!) or a banana. She drinks 2% milk with this. If she's really hungry, she gets a Nutripals bar or a granola bar - she'd allowed only ONE BAR of any sort per day in addition to the above or a "Go Gurt" (yogurt in a fun tube). We also have oatmeal days from time to time. I tried boiled eggs, but she didn't care for them.

How about making your own smoothies with plain yogurt or milk and fresh fruit.... a quick mix in the blender or one of those bullet blenders....you can add any other healthy ingredients like wheat germ,etc....Frozen fruit also works well and makes the smoothies thicker..Let him pick the friut combinations he likes...banana and strawberry...peaches and blueberries. You might have to add a little sugar or a little Splenda if that is used in your household....a lot less sugar than the premade kind...Also things like grilled cheese can be eaten for breakfast..lz

Sorry if this is a bit long, but I really believe in this and want to give you sufficient info:
I completely recommend products by Shaklee, a health and nutrition company that has been around for over 50 years. My 8 month old son takes their powdered infant vitamin formula. I believe in the products and want to spread the word, so I recently began selling them. I know they have meal replacement shakes for children (I use the one for adults).
Go to the website www.Shaklee.net/RecipeForHealth and click on NUTRITION on the left hand side. In the center of the screen are three green boxes. In the lower right box labeled Dietary Support, click on Children’s Health. On the very right hand side you will see “Children’s Health Products by Shaklee.” Meal Shakes is the first item listed. With two flavors to choose from, they provide 45% or more of the Daily Values for 19 essential vitamins and minerals, and are a rich source of calcium. You can see a PDF of the food label and the Kosher certification. Also check out the Vita-Lea Children below that. There is also information on Children’s Health.
Also click on ABOUT SHAKLEE at the top right of the website so you can check out the company and see the science and integrity that goes into developing and producing the products. If you are not satisfied (“Yucky, mommy!”), there is a 100% money-back guarantee on all products. You might as well try it! I hope this helps!

My 3.5 yr old son also loves his Dad's "adult" protein bars. :) They do have lots of nutrients!
Another option for breakfast is burritos---w/scrambled eggs, etc.
Bagels and "meat and cheese" sandwiches are some of my son's requests. He also loves pancakes! (you can buy "Eggos")
Obviously my son loves food! :)

Good luck!

What might be good for him is oatmeal (the reduced sugar kind, or the kind that you make on your own with no sugar) or malt-o-meal... that way, you can give him different kinds of "toppings" (raisins, milk, coconut flakes... whatever he likes) and let him make his own creation. It's one of the best things you can give him.
Will he eat scrambled eggs or pancakes? I make my 4-year old mickey mouse pancakes (use a 1/4 c measuring cup and add ears when pouring the batter into the pan... you can use raisins for eyes), or you can make a happy face with eggs and bacon or a banana.

Just a few ideas. I hope one of them works for you. Best of luck!

Everything you mentioned is prepackaged, processed "food". Have you considered cooking real meals for and/or with your son? Yes it takes more time and planning, but what on earth could possibly be more important than what goes into our bodies?

My kids are more likely to eat what they've helped to prepare, but here are some tried-and-true (and easy to make!) breakfasts that they love:

**frittatas of all kinds (right now we're all working our way through a spinach/feta/tomato one)
**french toast
**homemade smoothies: plain yogurt + frozen fruit + orange juice
**muffins - you can add flaxseed, oatmeal, pureed veggies to boost nutritional content
**leftovers from the day before (who says breakfast has to be "breakfasty"?
**eggs in all forms. With toast, crackers, bagels, tomatoes, cheese...

Good luck. Sometimes you have to sacrifice a bit of convenience for quality, but I think it's well worth it for your child.

I buy wholegrain pancake mix. I add a smashed banana to the pancakes, and I add protein powder. They do require a little syrup to be tasty, but honey is another good option.

There's also the book Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld that has other healthy options.

Good luck!

Is there a particular food that your son likes? Maybe eggs or ham or peaunt butter and jelly sandwiches? Breakfast doesn't have to be cereal or breakfast bars it just should be something with nutrition in it....my daughters didn't like cereal in the morning, not cold cereal, the cold milk bothered their stomach they said. My youngest daughter had to be awake and up for awhile before she could eat, not just get up, get dressed, now eat, time to go....if you know what I'm meaning. My little granddaughter likes cereal but with her milk in a cup, not in the bowl on the cereal. whatever works....Have you tried the "cereal bars" and maybe could he eat in the car at his leisure?
