Dr. Katz's mouthwash, toothpaste and other products are available at different local retailers, I've found the best price at Walmart. It gets rid of the bacteria that causes the bad breath. my husband said sometimes I have breath that smells like doggy doo. That is when I haven't been using those products and first thing in the am. Drink plenty of water. You may have a dairy allergy or intolerance if you get those tonsil stones others talked about. Love Dr. Katz products!

Oh and definitely get some of the Garden of Life Probiotics they are great products ;)

Start taking probiotics and acidophilis and garlic to control the yeast and try an over the counter reflux medicine it if helps for a bit then you might have to get a prescription one. Also do you avhe diabetes or insulin resistance? you could have gum disease and the gums have bacteria in the lining and that too casues bad breath.

There is this stuff called Breath Check from Puritan's Pride, a vitamin & supplement company that I've purchased from for about the last 15 years. Their site is www.puritan.com, and you can just type the product name in the search box. I am sure you're probably sick of buying herbal stuff, but if it's any consolation, the stuff is not too expensive and it's always buy 1 get 1 free or buy 2 get 3 free from this company. The downside is that you have to take 3 of them after every meal, but it does work. I get horrible breath in cold/flu season every year. I've been to the doctor and dentist. The doctor says with colds, my body absorbs excess mucus and doesn't produce enough natural enzymes to break up the bacteria that can come with that and the food I digest. I don't eat a very stinky diet, but I do drink a ton of water, which really helps. My dentist says there's nothing wrong with my teeth or gums (dental infection can cause very bad breath), but that due to allergies or colds, I often sleep with my mouth open and that is probably what makes my breath and mouth taste horrible in the morning. If I sleep with a Breathe Right strip on, I can usually breathe through my nose all night long, and this really makes a difference in my breath and morning taste. The pills do work, but I don't take them anymore. Mine has gotten better, but still acts up during this season. Out of pure self-consciousness, I live on those Listerine breath strips, though, when I'm in close quarters with other people!

homeopathy can help. it's a natural, holistic medicine w/ no side effects or drug interactions. you need to see a professional. mine is in naperville (www.dupagehomeopathic.com) or there are others in chicagoland. if you don't live near Naperville, i can send you a link to an online homeopathic practitioner database. we use our homeopath for all our health issues -- chronic or acute (temporary) and see amazing results very quickly.
read more about homeopathy and how it works on dr. polich's website. the newsletters, testimonials and photos sections are really helpful too.

Hi Barb,
I have read, in my quest for health, that bad breath is a sign of a unhealthy colon. You may want to check that out. Here is a great book that was very useful for me: Detox for Life by Loree Taylor Jordan. It is very easy reading and FUNNY too! email me if you have any questions ____@____.com
I have to agree with a few of your other responses in that most times it is a sign of candida, food allergies, gluten intolerance, etc. May sound overwhelming, but you will feel so much better once you get these under control.
Best to you,

Hi B.,

Both myself & my daughter have had the same issues recently. I did some snooping and found that the problem (at least on my end) was possibly chronic sinusitis. Especially in Chicago, where the weather changes so rapidly, it is easy for sensitive sinus passages to get dried out. I would wake up with a stuffy nose, and had been sleeping with my mouth open, allowing bacteria to grow not only in my mouth, but in the mucous which was draining into my throat. Gross (sorry if this is tmi). During the day, I would occasionally be slightly stuffy, but I think it became so common that I failed to notice anything was amiss.

If this sounds familiar, then here are some steps that I've taken that might help. As mentioned earlier, it is really important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and cut back on the sugars - it takes five times the amount of water intake as sweets for your body to be able to process sugars properly (for instance, if you eat a cup of sugar, you need to drink five cups of water for your body to be able to flush it through your system). Plus, bacteria love sugar! Try sleeping with a warm-air humidifier in your room, especially in the winter months when air is really dry.

With my daughter, the issue was that she was unwell, and her body was needing some help in regulating itself - we let her rest and filled her with fluids until she was able to flush it out of her system. If you've recently made a change in diet, or have had a shift in your health, this may be the cause as well.

Of course, if none of this is working, you should definitely see your dentist or a trusted physician to discuss other options.

Good luck!

Warmly,

~L.

Try Smart Mouth. It is excellent. After about 2 weeks you will notice a difference. Let me know how it works for you.

You can purchase it at Walgreens, WalMart. Good luck. I once had your problem and now you can't even tell. I love it but I use Tri-Oral from QVC but you can buy it at the retail level as Smart Mouth which is a little more cost effective.
Either way it is the same product. Check it out.

Hi B.,

I am going thru this with my daughter right now. first step is to go see your dentist, if your dentist cannot determine the source of the problem, go see your doctor. There are many health problems that can affect your mouth odor.

also, reduce the mouthwashes, mints and gums. Listerine is the only mouth wash my dentist recommends from OTC selection, and eliminate any gum or mint that contains sugar. I have heard though that Xylitol containing gums are good for the mouths overall health. (we eat a lot of garlic - and in the summer time we pick fresh mint leaves from the garden and we each chew on one after a garlic meal... aglio olio (garlic and oil) is especially offensive)

dump the expensive toothpastes, use baking soda straight from the box. (brush gently though since it's somewhat abrasive) - or try a baking soda toothpaste. it's supposed to be the best way to keep our mouths healthy. and i cannot stress enough.. floss floss floss. if you hate flossing, like me... use a water pik - i put a little listerine in the resevoir with the water because i hate the burn of straight listerine.

good luck to you.

p.s. drink lots of water too...

Do you mean you wake up with the taste of bile in your mouth? If so, you might want to check with your doctor. You could be having this problem because of acid reflux. In fact, you should be checking with your doctor, regardless. If your doctor doesn't help, try a different doctor, and try your dentist as well. If you've tried home remedies or over-the-counter remedies without resolultion, it's time to get a professional involved.

Your bad breathe is probably not coming from dental issues. My son had this problem when he was younger and it stemmed from a presistant sinus infection. Perhaps you have allergies, etc and it is irratating your sinus cavities. Try taking an OTC antihistamine. Also even a small tooth or gum infection will cause this.

Hi there-

I'm sorry to hear that you are going through this. Is it possible that you have a Sinus Infection? Sometimes this can cause a foul smell in your mouth as the bacteria collects there. Also, are you doing any kind of extreme dieting? Sometimes the changes in your metabolic system can cause changes in the acidity of your breath. My final thought is that you have Gingivitis and you have bacteria collecting between your teeth that has caused a build-up. The solution? If it's from a sinus infection, you need an antibiotic. If you are dieting, you need to be careful because you are probably spilling keytones and it could be dangerous. Finally, if it's from Gingivitis, you will need to see your Dentist for a thorough cleaning and Floss, Floss, Floss.

If none of the above fit the bill, I would as another posted, go see your Dentist first and if he/she can't find anything, go see your Doctor.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hello B.,

Have you gone to the dentist to have your gums checked? They can diagnose gum disease which gives off a bad smell because the gums are infected. Also have a physical from your medical doctor. Many illnesses such as diabetes , acid reflux and sinus and lung conditions also give off odors that you can smell. Your body is telling you something is not right, have it checked out.

I hope this helps,

This is a sensitive subject. I've not experienced foul breath other than when I first wake up in the morning, but have a relative whose breath can be rather unpleasant. Because none of us have been able to tell her, we've researched to see what the problem could possibly be. Turns out there's a list of things health wise that could be contributing factors to the condition. Heart problems, stomach problems, bowel problems on and on. Perhaps you should talk to your doctor. Have a complete check up to rule out all those things and go from there. Good luck with that. If you have suggestions on how I could talk to my cousin, that would be great. She recently had a stroke and has tons of other health issues, but the bad breath thing has been ongoing for years. She doesn't seem to notice which we all find rather interesting as she can be very offensive. I want to help, but don't know how.

I've read that bad breath stems from your digestive sytem, and sometimes is associated with the imbalance of good and bad bacteria in your stomach. I've read that probiotics might help the situation, as it balances your body with enough good bacteria. I've taken Garden of Life Primal Defense Ultra Probiotics, you can get it at the Vitamin Shoppe, or online. (It's less expensive online.) I've felt alot better when i'm on this, it helps me get over a cold alot faster when taken on a regular basis. It might help with your problem, as it restores your digestive system with good bacteria needed to keep you healthy.

B.,

There should be two issues to consider here. First, if you haven't already, consult your dentist or doctor about the issue to see if it's simply "mouth related". Do you experience any heartburn or sour stomach? Do you eat before bed? My husband had this issue several years ago, and he even woke up one day and his whole mouth, gums and everything were tinged BLACK! We went to the hospital and found out that he was experiencing bouts of acid reflux at night which caused the foul breath in the am...but during the day, esp. in the morning, because he'd skip food and just have coffee which increased the acids and the bad breath. Either way, if it's chronic you should consult a doctor and not keep wasting money on remedies that only mask the true issue.
Good luck,

J.

You may have somethng called an esophageal diverticulus, which is an outpouching from your esophagus (the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach). I have a couple of ideas about very bad breath. First, have you been to the dentist and to the doctor? Gum disease and problems with the teeth can cause halitosis, so can problems with the throat such as infections, food being stuck, pus and cancer.

Ketosis can also cause horrible breath. I'm no doctor. I only know from experience that when people are dieting and losing weight, their breath is awful. Constipation also causes icky breath. And, is your stomach upset? Acid stomach or other imbalances make people's breath stink.

One thing that seems to help me is a particular brand of tongue scraper. The only place I have ever bought them is at Karyn's Fresh Corner, a raw food restaurant located on Halsted St. in Chicago. You use it to remove the grey film from your tongue. Sometimes I have to scrape (no it doesn't hurt at all) 10 or more times to remove all the grey stuff. Other times there isn't any grey film at all. It all depends on whether or not I'm constipated, eating healthy, etc... Vegetarians will tell you that meat makes people's breath stink too.

Good luck!

Agree with many posts, sounds like a yeast overgrowth, which can be caused by exhaberate the issue by eating excess of gluten/wheat, dairy, sugar, caffiene, chocolate, high sugar fruits and more. Food allergies and food intolerances too can increase yeast growth, it is typically the foods we crave the most of are the ones we should stay away from. Go to www.drrapp.com who discusses such issues in her books, you can purchase on amazon. Other signs of yeast overgrowth is constipation, dandruff, smelly hands, feet and head and of course yeast infections. Eating fresh parsley after each meal will help combat bad breath, but chewing gum, breath mints will make it worse b/c of the sugar in it. Agree get a tongue scraper, gargle with a little hydrogen peroxide (fluroide has sugar in it). There are diets out there that teach you how to do a candidia cleanse to get rid of the yeast, it is difficult, you know when you are killing it off when your body starts to crave sugar, the yeast needs sugar to live and grow, it acts as a fertilizer for yeast. Agree, many doctors don't agree that a yeast overgrowth is a problem..but it causes many problems because there is sugar in everything we eat!!! Good luck

B.,

This is a difficult issue shared by many people. I market a line of nutritional products, so I went out to our discussion board to see what was out there. A lot of possibilities exist. My first thought when reading your story was candida. Are you familiar with it? Many women have undiagnosed candida. Basically, candida is a yeast overgrowth which is fed by sugars and all those other things we like to eat. You would most likely have other digestive issues or yeast problems if that were the culprit. Other possibilities could be an undiagnosed food allergy, a liver issue (some type of toxicity). I have access to what a lot of people have done with this problem, but finding the underlying cause is the key to solving your issue. If I were you, I would first log everything I was eating on a daily basis. Also record constipation or any digestive issues. Rate your breath on a 1 to 10 scale each day. At the end of a week, go back and determine whether there was any change in your rating which can be related to what you ate. Are you consuming a lot of one type of food? Many people have digestive issues with dairy and gluten which haven't been diagnosed.

Hi B.,

I have had the same problem. Do you still have your tonsils? If so, you probably have "cryptic tonsils" as diagnosed by my Dr. My tonsils have deep crevices where food gets caught and trapped (gross! I know). I try to keep the tonsils cleaned out using swabs (like Q-tips). Once you remove the trapped food, your breath returns to normal. Drinking a lot when eating helps. I totally sympathize with you because I've been there. I hope this helps.

Hi B.,
I am a nurse and current am doing wellness eduction. I have read through the responses and think that seeing someone about this is important. The foul odor may come from an infection, or from acid reflux or a number of other things (as one cannot diagnose through a computer). The fact that you are having the taste of Bowel in your mouth is a good indicator that it is coming from the stomach and a doctor would be the best place to go first.
One thought that has not been mentioned and is associated with diet is, if you have created a ketotic state in your body by eating too much protein such as with the Adkins diet, this creates VERY foul breath.
Hope this helps!

Do you still have your gallbladder?? If you do maybe it stems from that. Maybe it it coming from the acids in yur stomach. How are your teeth? If you have any tooth decay it could be from that. Did you try scraping your tongue? If you have health insurance I would seek your primary Doctor first. good luck and I hope you can solve your problem...

Dear B.,

I read through all the responses, so I will not repeat all that was said.

If you can rule out a dental problem, my first suggestion is that you may have a candida problem (yeast overgrowth). Most Americans struggle with thgis, but do not realize it. Plus, the doctors do not recognize it as a real problem.

You can do a research onluine to find lots of information. Basically, sugar creates a breeding ground for candida. So, eliminating or reducing sugar is a good first step. I have been researching this for several years and would be happy to share what I have been doing personally to deal with candida.

Second, I would recommend a detox program. It is so essential to have foods moving in and out of the body on a daily basis. This may be tmi, but every person should have at least 2-3 bowel movements a day. Otherwise, you are constipated. Lots of water, extra fiber, probiotics, and a couple other herbs are things I often recommend. Again, please feel free to contact me for a free wellness consultation

Try having your sinus checked. My husband has that same foul spell especially in the morning. It's smells like bowel. We found out it's his sinus. They drain down his throat alot.

I would go talk to your DR. It could be a medical issue, usually not a serious one.

You need a through dental exam and consult. Sit down with your dentist and find out what the physical reason could be. You also might want a pysical with your doctor, including blood work. Often times foul breath is an indicator or an imbalance in your body. Never hurts to have it checked out. =)
