Health Benefits of Cinnamon?

This thought just popped in my head and might sound really silly, but right after my son was born one of my girlfriends was making me a cup of coffee, and sprinkled a little cinnamon in the coffee grinds before brewing it... YUM!! Since that day, I'm hooked. I make myself 2 cups of coffee every morning and sprinkle cinnamon in it. Looking back, I dropped the baby weight CRAZY fast this time (took me 2+ YEARS after my first 2 kids to even shed 5 pounds of baby weight)... by the time my son was about 3 months old (not even) I was back in my 'skinny jeans'. I'm not trying to brag here, I was completely dumbfounded by it and contributed it to the stress of having 3 children, but now I'm wondering if we're onto something here... does cinnamon speed up your metabolism or anything? Does anyone know ANY health benefits of cinnamon? Or any ADVERSE effects from it? (Meaning, am I killing myself here?!) THANKS LADIES!! ;)

What can I do next?

I have heard that cinamon helps the body process sugars better and that not all of the sugar is absorbed b/c of the cinnamon.
I also make pancakes for my 27mo DD w/ cinnamon, dried apples, ground up flax seed, and wheat germ. I do put a small amount of syrup on them to counter the "healthy stuff."

HI R.,

Ceylon Cinnamon is great. Saigon cinnamon has a toxic ingredient in it. the most prominent cinnamon in the US is the Saigon type. Spend the extra and look for the Ceylon. It is an absolutely wonderful food...

Yes, it's beneficial. No there are no adverse side effects. However, you can't pin all of your nutritional goals on any one ingredient, vitamin, mineral, herb, etc. You can add it to your coffee or your yogurt or anything else, but it doesn't substitute for all the other things you need to do.

cinnamon has been known to steady blood sugar levels and there is a question if it lowers cholesterol (my hubby's level dropped after I added a spoonful a day to his diet.) I wouldn't go hog wild and eat bucketfulls or anything, anything over moderation is too much.

It does help regulate blood sugar and can also help regulate your blood pressure. A lot of people in the Meditteranean region add it to their tomato sauces for those reasons. I've never heard of any negative association with cinnamon.

I hate to be a party pooper, but cinnamon is also an allergen for many people. Many kids, bakers exposed to it at work, and increasingly women in general, experience contact dermatitis or worse from cinnamon (I've read of women who can't walk through airports because of Cinnabon!). My 1 yr old daughter broke out in hives on her face everytime she had food with cinnamon in it, but she outgrew the allergy. If you're nursing, I'd be cautious about ingesting too much, just in case it's getting in your milk. And be careful not to sprinkle any on your babies!

Regarding the weight loss, are you nursing this child more than the others? If the weight loss is that surprising, you might have to have your thyroid checked. Thyroid imbalances are common after pregnancy. Then again, with 3 kids, you probably don't find time to eat!
