my daughter found a lump on her son's back today - the baby is not quite 2 mos old - we are taking him to the doctor tomorrow - the lump is located just below his shoulder blade on the left side of his back...is this unusual?

Glad she's taking him to the ped.

I have a number of lumps under my skin and they are simply lymph nodes. The one that scared me is at the base of my skull right next to my spine. Scared the bajeebers out of me when I found it, but had it checked and it's nothing of concern. The big one on my jawline swells when I'm sick. I used to have a cyst too but that's gone now. Hopefully that's all it is or even something less annoying.

Hi M. - Don't stress about it! Worry on your or your daughter's part only makes life tougher for the two of you & the baby. It is good that the baby is being seen by the doctor tomorrow. When my youngest was a baby he had a large (to me it was) lump on him too (his was on his chest). The doctor felt it & we decided to observe as he felt it was just excess fluid and would go away. It still bothered me - yes us moms worry & stress about the worst case - but it was nothing & went away just like the doctor said. Yes there are times when lumps can be a sign of something else but the odds of that are much smaller. "IF" for some reason the doctor thinks it might be something else (usually they can feel to "see" what is inside the lump) they might do a needle biopsy (can be very safe & they use numbing medicine) to test the fluid in the lump. Even if they do that please dont stress because that stress & worry will only hurt you & will make the baby "feel" that something is not comfortable & may make them more irritable - babies are so good at picking out others' feelings & playing on those. Just relax & things especially with new babies are very common - that is why we have good peditricians to run all these concerns through. Take care & God Bless

Hi M.-

My husband had a fatty lumb removed from his back around the shoulder blades a few years back. It was scary, but the doctor say common. I've noticed another one recently, but I'm not worried.

It's best to have it checked out, but it's probably just a lump of fat. FYI- my husband's doctor said it would probably reoccur over the years.

I wish your family the best of luck.

Scary, but trust your doctor. My daughter developed a lymph angioma under her right armpit while in the womb. A pediatric specialist examined her after delivery (via C section) and reassured me that it was no big deal, they would remove it when she was about 6 months old. They removed it and it was more traumatic for me than her. Her scar is barely noticable...Pray!

Hi,
I'm sure it depends on what the bump looks like. Our daughter developed a bump at ~2 months on her back. The pediatrician actually found it during her check up. We kept an eye on it and when it started to change... we decided to have it surgically removed. That happened right around 6 or 7 mos old and she did great.
The pediatrician will have a good idea of the issue with the bump....
Thanks,
M.
