Hi all - I work full time and have a 5 year old and two year old. So, point being - I am busy....I regularly go to be at 10 (sometimes before) and my alarm goes off at 5:30am. In the past couple of months I have been waking up EXHAUSTED - seems I have to peel myself out of bed and I have headaches. It's almost like I have a hangover every morning (yet no drinks!!!!!!). I feel like the headaches are sinus pressure but not sure because it doesn't seem like I am congested - just that it feels like that kind of headache. Anyone familiar with these symptoms? I plan to call and talk to my dr. but thought I'd see if anyone else has had similar issues in the past. Maybe it has something to do with the milder than normal Illinois winter.......

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone - I appreciate everyones answers! I have actually gone onto my carriers website to find a internal medical dr. as the primary physician I go to (close to where I work) is rarely available and when I do make an appointment he gets to the office more than a 1/2 hr after the appointment time - so, what's the point of having a dr. close to work b/c it's not like I can get in and out on a lunch! Anyway - I can see a lot of your answers making sense......I have been checked for thyroid issues before b/c it runs in the family, so does allergy issues!

Another culprit could be TMJ disorder, which involves the joint connecting the upper and lower jaw, and can cause the symptoms you discribed and more.

Talk to your doctor about a sleep study. It's possible you have sleep apnea and snoring. Those who suffer from sleep apnea understand what it's like to wake up tired. Also ask for a blood test to check for anemia. Low iron levels can happen - which also cause sleepiness and headaches.

The headaches could be from a sinus infection as well as dehydration or allergies. That headache to me - sounds like an allergy headache that is also a sinus infection. I'm not a doctor but that's what is my problem when I have a headache!!

I'm sorry you are having this problem!! It sucks!!! I hope you get resolution soon!!

Call the Doc, have your Thyroid & your BP checked both of these cause both of these symptoms. The other mamas are right about not enough rest (none of us get enough rest!) & fluids are important. Anemia could be a culprit as well (Doc will have blood drawn for this along with the Thyroid). Are you eating a balanced diet? Do you drink alot of soda? All of these are factors for the symptoms you mentioned.

Best for a better day!

It sounds like allergies, the warm winter has made it just awful around here. The problem is you can't breathe right when you sleep so your sleep is hampered making you tired all day. The headaches are from sinus pressure, ya know?

The only other time I had symptoms like that was extreme stress and the muscles in my back were tied up in knots. I went to the doctor for new allergy meds and he put me on muscle relaxants for a week followed by antidepressants followed by me quitting the job that was causing me stress.

Oh Cheryl, good call, I forgot about dehydration. Lot of that going around too.

Are you drinking enough water? I am a full time working mom to a 5 year old and an 18 mo old. I find that I forget to drink enough fluids throughout the day with everything else going on in my life. When I do this, I wake up some mornings with a "hangover"- totally exhausted, groggy, with a headache. I got one of those Camelbak water bottles for Christmas, and I am doing much better about drinking water all throughout the day. I take it into meetings with me and out to lunch. II have seen a big difference.
Anyway, hope this helps.

Get your thyroid checked.
Exhaustion and headaches are two of the top symptoms of thyroid issues. I'm hypo, and I know that I need to have my meds adjusted anytime I have those symptoms for a few weeks in a row.

That's how I discovered that I have a condition to begin with.

Find another doctor and get tested for thyroid, b12, iron and vitamin d. If they come back normal, get a sleep study. That's what I did when I had the exact same symptoms and I found outI have sleep apnea. I was having a hard time getting out of bed, headaches in the morning. Turned out both were symptoms of sleep apnea.

The past few months hubby and I have been having issues with sleeping. We go to bed around 9pm every night and we're up no later than 530am during the week. He's exhausted by 7pm every night and I wake up with horrible headaches while still feeling exhausted through out the day. (I'm dragging now and trying really hard not to take a nap!)

We talked to our family physician and he said we weren't getting enough sleep. So we started putting the kids to bed at 8 (boy were they thrilled!) and then we go straight to bed. Still isn't helping. Now when I get the headaches, I take Midol. I know it sounds silly, but the Midol I take has caffeine in it, and it seems to be helping thus far. (I take it in the AM when I get up and it helps tremendously.)

Maybe you could try it until you get into the doctor.

Good luck and I hope you get to feeling better.

well, not the exhaustion, but the "hangover" headaches YES! I used the exact same term to describe them and they were (as much as I could figure) due to the constant changing in weather (crazier than normal 70 one day, 32 the next - it was hellacious for almost a week and then evened out)
My bet would be on the odd weather. . .

Well this is an answer you do not want - but I must share it. Several years ago I went through this. I was exhausted -- EXHAUSTED - after work everyday. i was single (but dating my future husband and now father of our three kids). I would get home from teaching by 3pm, and literally had to couch it for hours - forcing myself just to get up and eat and get ready for the next day. This went on for months. I had an infection, a lump in my neck that came and went and came back, and headaches. I tried everything and went to several doctors. Several months later - and 30 days before my wedding - I was diagnosed with cancer - lymphoma. The lumps in my neck were becoming larger and numerous. (Note - many people who have lymphoma do not have such obvious symptoms in their neck, since it can also be in other parts of the body.) I probably had the exhaustion and headaches for 4 months before a lump surfaced in my neck. So - stay with your doctor and be sure to monitor yourself. I had to keep going back and tell them - "No, I still do not feel right." Biopsies, blood tests, etc. It all shook out in the end. Now, 6 years cancer free.

Could be TMJ as someone said or griding your teeth. Could also be a food intolerance. Find someone who will test you for that. People think food intolerances lead to stomach issues but not always. They can cause headaches and tiredness too.

I had that issue not too long ago, and I found that taking vitamins like womans 1 a day had a big impact since with my schedule I'm not the healthiest eater. Also, doing some small warm-up exercises helped to wake up my body. I normally just jump in place a few times to get my blood pumping. Then I take a nice quick shower and I'm ready to start my day, all without a cup of coffee :) . Your mattress may be an issue as well. Especially if it is an older one. My husband had problems getting rest at night until we changed our mattress and since both of us have woke up even more well rested. Another small tip, cut out the greasy foods and caffeine before bed. That helps with headaches too. Hope this helps.

There are a lot of different issues that have already been mentioned that it could be. So many issues are linked to our lack of getting balanced nutrition. When my husband and I started supplementing I couldn't believe the difference in my energy level and how much better I slept at night. It feels so good to wake up before the alarm ready to go for the day!
