This is a question for all you moms who have ever had to deal with this. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. But will there ever come a time when I will be able to stop looking in my children's hair and dreading finding some? Will I ever be able to look at things my children do and not say to myself I sure hope that child doesn't have lice? We had it earlier in the spring and now it has been found in my DS's classroom so I am checking for it again. Does it ever end?

I always refer moms to headlice.org. I think it has the best advice for any mom who knows what it's like. I too dread finding it again but we don't do all the old wives tales anymore that so many moms do. I got the facts and it was much easier than many people told me.

We never used the shampoos, we used regular shampoo and conditioner, we did section off the kids hair into about 200 ponytails and go through each one while looking through a huge lighted magnifying glass and got every bug and nit the first time through. We kept going through and looking at least once a day and never found another nit or bug.

Many people swear that by putting 1-2 drops of tea tree oil in their shampoo bottles that they never have lice again. It really stinks and is very oily so I think it might work.

Lice only like clean people, they can't stick their nits on dirty hair.

tea tree oil shampoo and laundry soap. I had head lice as a child and never wanted my kids to experience it. We have always used the laundry soap and, if its going around, the shampoo too. My 4 boys have NEVER had lice, so it must be working because it goes through the school all the time.

Tea tree oil shampoo also prevents lice

Eventually, yes.

If you find and lice at all, immediately treat with the shampoo, wash all bedding and anything else you can in HOT water (some stuffed animals can go in the wash, make sure to wash all coats and hats too), pack the stuff that you can't wash in plastic bags for a week (seal them up), and spray everything down with lysol or the specific lice-killing spray.

And be assured that lice can happen to anyone, no matter how clean the home is or how clean the kid is (they like clean hair better, I heard!)

I think it took us maybe 6 months and numerous repeats of treatment, and finally cutting daughter's hair, before it went away. All of us had lice at least once during that time, even me (eewww). But it's been years now, and I hardly ever worry about it although I do check hair occasionally.

It is one of the greatest drags in this world but I found a solution. Bug Bag. Very easy for your kids to use and totally green.
You can find it on www.bugbagusa.com

Yes, you just need to do the best that you can to prevent it. Use a shampoo like Fairly Tales for lice prevention and also use the spray in conditioner every morning before school. Also spray a lice preventer on backpacks, jackets, car seats, etc. If you can, don't wash hair every night. Keep it a little dirty or well conditioned. Lice hate that. The products are a little expensive but you can google it and buy it in bulk for a lot less.

Good luck - we had the battle last December and we are hoping to never have that fight again.

My kids got it a couple of years ago. I never saw any actual lice, but did manage to comb out some nits. What a hassle! Now it's going around their school (different school, different state, different part of the country - those lice sure do get around!) again, so we've talked about not sharing any hats or clothes, keeping our backpacks and "stuff" in our own cubbies, and, especially for my daughters, keeping their long hair back in a braid or ponytail and avoiding hugging or physically getting close to anyone in their class. Understandably, the school won't tell us WHO in their class has it, so I can't specifically tell them to keep away from so-and-so, so I've been telling them to keep away from everyone. At least until this outbreak passes. I REALLY don't want to go through a lice attack again! And neither do my girls, so they've been very compliant about this.

I've gone through it too. You have to wash EVERYTHING. Cloths, bedding, stuffed animals, floors, ect.. not just heads. You probably know this already but you can't be lazy about it at all. And if your kids go to friends houses offten you need to talk to their mothers about it..
You can get spray too. You have to be very careful. I know how it goes. I had it plenty of times as a kid :/

Trust me, I totally understand. My kids don't go to school, but I babysit a little girl who had it. What we did to protect ourself from getting it is I put alot of drops of Tea tree oil in our shampoo and in our laundry soap. I can tell you that it works because we did get it from her, that's how I found out she had it and I was told about tea tree oil. When I check my son's hair to pull eggs out, they were all on the very front of his head, because he always missed that spot when he would wash his hair. I also got the original Listerine, put it in the spray bottle and will spray the furniture and jackets and you can also do that on back packs.
