My son is 13 months old, and he seems to love to bang his head on everything. He thinks it is funny unless he does it too hard or on my knee etc and then it hurts him. I saw a special on 20/20 i think about Jenny McCarthy's littl boy being austic and she said her son did this too. Does anyone have good information about austism or any other signs? DOes anyone else have a child who likes to hit their heads on everything? PLease help.

What can I do next?

Aleisha,

Unless your child is showing other signs of autism (anti-social, does not make eye contact, speaks very little) i wouldn't worry. They say this could be a sign of high intelligence as well. My husband used to bang his head on the wall when he was a child and now he has a PhD in poylmer science! Your son might also be doing it to get attention, especially if you respond to it all of the time.

My brother used to bang his head on EVERYTHING. People, trees, cars, literally everything. It started sometime after he was walking. I think its just a stage. My son is starting a little bit with it now (he is 3). For some reason they think its fun! Of course Pro sports players think crashing, punching, hitting, is all fun too. So I guess it could be some sort of testosterone thing! =) If your really concerned with the autism possibility call your doctor. They are the only ones who can diagnose properly!
Good luck!

there are several otehr signs and issues with autism outside of head banging, head banging is actually perfectly normal. like you said he's ahvign fun untill he gets hurt. my kids did it out of frusteration. if they got mad it was part of thier tantrum. they out grew it. at this point i wouldn't worry to much if your son is develpomentally where he should be in regards to walking and soializing.
here's a page on asperger's syndrom which is on the low end of the autism spectrum http://www.udel.edu/bkirby/asperger/karen_williams_guidel... it was all i could find right now but i love web md as well for stuff like this, autism is one of those funny things where no to autistic children are the same period, soit's hard to tell andit's really early to tell as well at 13 months. so don't worry ask you ped about it next time you go in and just make sure he isn't hitting his head on anythign to hard. lol. good luck.

I'm going through the same thing right now, except my son is going to be 3.. he did the head banging thing around a year and then he's was okay and all the sudden started it up again.. I have no idea why he does it, but I think it's for attention and again out of frustration. I just ingnore it or tell him to go in the other room and do it, if he has too.. my doctor told me it's a normal stage and they won't do it to the point that it'll hurt. So just hang in there.. hopefully the stage will pass soon for you.. good luck.

head banging is a sign of high inteligence believe it or not my daughter did that and that is what my ped told me and my daughter is 8 now and excels in school work she actually goes to another school on friday for gifted children. As long as your baby is progressing "normally" then i wouldn't stress children with autism usually don't speak or show emotion bucause they don't know how because the left and right brain do not work together if he is sitting crawling pulling himself up and talking even if just a few words i wouldn't worry if that doesn't help calm you make an appointment with your ped and they will confirm and put you at ease. Being a mom is scary especially with the first one but trust me you'll do fine and you will worry trust me i have 3 girls it does get easier.
