He's a Weirdo, Right?

My husband is so weird. He likes cupcakes, but not cake. Huh? I made a cake the other day, I usually make the same recipe into cupcakes, but it's so moist cupcakes usually fall apart. So he says, "Oh you made a cake?" sounding a bit disappointed. I just start laughing, "It's the same recipe, just square not round."

It's not the first time. A had a college make a cake for me, she had a bunch of left over batter and icing so she made some extra cupcakes and sent them home with me. He refused to eat the cake but ate the cupcakes. Come on dude! It's the SAME DAMN THING!

He says I do the same thing, because I like chocolate chips in my vanilla ice cream but not chocolate ice cream. I think they have distinctively different flavors. It's not like I like chocolate ice cream in a cone but not a cup. :) So are we both weird? Does anyone else have a weird food preference?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'm glad he's not the only one! LOL At least you guys have reasons. When I ask him he just shrugs.
Also, we don't fight about it, I swear. We both just laugh about it.

Actually, here is the taste difference in a cupcake vs cake - the "crust" or more golden part of a cupcake is all around where on a slice of cake you may not have as much of that particular flavor. It is kinda like brownie edges vs brownie centers - some like the edge some like the middle. So, he may be a weirdo, you know him better, but I can understand his cupcake vs cake thing. I will only consume milk when flavored by something ie: cookies, cereal, syrup etc.

Cupcakes have a much higher frosting to cake ratio! He likes the frosting.

My grandma did the same thing at my daughters birthday, I had a cake and cupcakes, same kind, same frosting... she was very insistent about wanting the cupcake with ice cream. She even sent the plate back when I just put a piece of cake on it :)

I like cake but not cupcakes...it is because they tend to fall apart and crumble everywhere and have that messy liner. Plus, most bakeries just HEAP the frosting on so that it is like 3 inches tall. I love frosting, but the ratio should not be 1 part frosting to 1 part cupcake!

My hubby thinks I am weird because I hate food coloring. I hate the taste of it (he claims it is tasteless, but nonetheless, I can taste it, and it is grody!) And it freaks me out when everyone's teeth are blue or something from eating colored frosting. Yuck!!

I was thinking the same thing as Kristina M.--the textures are different between cake and cupcake. I'll add that he might feel overwhelmed with a whole cake. I hate to have a huge glass of water, and I hate for the servers to refill my water glass if I haven't finished. With a smaller (regular 8 ounces) glass of water I feel like I can finish it. A larger amount at once feels daunting, even though I can chug 20-30 ounces with one meal. I don't enjoy drinking directly from an unending source. Maybe a whole cake feels like that to him.

They're super different!!

Cupcakes are bitten and picked up with your hands. Cake is eaten with a fork.

Cupcakes have 1 layer of frosting. Cake has 2-3.

Texture is different, as is taste, because of the above. Sensory experience is totally different as well.

Similarly, many recipes (like this one) bake differently (density is different), which alters the taste and sensory nature of it.

I like hot cake, fresh from the oven, but not cold or room temp, or frosted cake. :D

(Um... I also hate to bring it up... But I can make 30 different dishes with bacon & eggs & flour. Radically different dishes. I was broke 1 month, and that's all I had. Pasta Carbonarra, quiche, tamago, puff pastry w custard, egg drop soup, burritos, etc... All same ingredients, just made differently.)

My husband won't eat a pizza that does not have peperroni on it. I dont get that. I mean, he likes pizza, and I get that he likes it better with peperroni, but to claim to hate pizza that is missing peperroni seems wierd to me. Just had this argument last night.... the only frozen pizza left was cheese only and he was soooo upset! Poor man-baby ;0)

Let's hear it for the wierdos! I like nuts by themselves, but never in cakes, cookies, candy, or even peanut butter. And I'll eat tomatoes in spaghetti sauce but not off the vine. I'm glad I'm not the only one in the Weird Pool.

If that's the worst thing your husband does, you have a keeper!

Actually it is not the same damn thing. Granted I have never heard of someone not eating cake that eats cupcakes but they are very different. You yourself said in cupcake for the recipe falls apart. Obviously it cooks different because of the different size and in his defense there is a different cake to frosting ratio.

Personally I prefer cake because it has a higher frosting to cake ratio. :)

He actually came up with a good comparison. Your ice cream is also the same yet very different. I am with you on the chocolate chip not chocolate ice cream. :)

I guess I am saying you are both normal. Now kiss and make up.

I like grapes, cotton candy, and chocolate, but cannot stand grape or cotton candy -flavored things OR chocolate ice cream! Maybe I'm weird.

My husband's favorite cake is yellow with chocolate icing. How boring is that? Every year for his birthday, I make him this very easy cake and he loves it!

To each his own! :)

He prefers the frosting:cake ratios of cupcakes, maybe?

I'm weird, perhaps, because I really don't care for sweets at all. Maybe a chocolate croissant (I've written an entire blogpost to the glory of a pain au chocolat!), but otherwise, the sugar in my tea makes life sweet enough. BUT, I do eat seaweed--packets and packets of it. I'd eat eggs and rice for breakfast every day if I could.

I think we're all a little weird-- It makes life fun and best of all--- hey, you don't have to share so much cake, right?

Maybe he just can't admit out loud that he loves how inherently cute cupcakes are? Maybe he has justified in his mind that eating a cupcake is okay, because "its a smaller serving"? Not that it is, but you know, you can justify anything! :)

My husband - the chef - is a whiney 4 yr old about food. He won't eat anything having to do with an avocado. He won't eat any fruit at all. No pickles. No chicken breasts. No fish with skin on. Wierdo. He also refuses to eat Sri Racha sauce, but pours tobasco all over everything. The jerk had the nerve to make a signature sauce at work that all his patrons rave about. Guess what the main ingerdiant is...Sri Racha!!! uuughh what a wierdo

I don't like icing, but I do like cake. My daughter likes icing but not the cake. So, problem solved. She sucks the icing, I get the cake/cupcake. I like the inside piece of cake (less icing!)

My husband thinks I'm a freak of nature because I HATE, LOATH, get GROSSED OUT by cheese. Yuck yuck yuck. My kids love it! I would make grilled cheese sandwiches (yes, I'm an excellent Mother!!!) and when I had to touch the cheese, I thought I would barf. AHHH!

My son will eat cooked carrots, but not raw. My daughter is opposite.
My kids LOVE ketchup, but won't eat tomatoes.
I like raw tomatoes, but hate cooked or stewed tomatoes.

My MIL will only eat 'inner' cake pieces. My hubby only wants 'edge'.

It could be that he doesn't want to deal with a plate and fork. when you eat a cupcake, you put the wrapper in the trash and done!

We don't like frosting.
We eat cake, baked like a cake, or in cupcake shape, without frosting at all.
Occasionally, like for a holiday dinner or special meal, I will frost a cake. My guests like frosting - my son and I will scrape it off.

Food preferences - not really - but I will not share a cup of milk with anyone - that is just nasty to me.

My son loves ketchup on everything - and hates tomatoes.
My husband loves peanuts - but hates peanut butter - the stickiness bothers him.
I suspect with the cake vs cupcake thing - your husband likes the finger food eating of the cupcakes - with cake you usually need a plate and fork.
If he could eat a cake with his hands he might be good.
I love hot fudge sundaes - but hate chocolate ice cream.
I'm the only one in our house who actually likes liver and onions, sushi, and oyster stew.
Oh well! That means the few times we have them, there's all the more for me!

We all have our weird things I think. I don't particularly like leftovers, at all. My husband loves them. I mean, there are a very select few things that are actually better leftover, I know this, I understand it, I still always would prefer 'new' food for every meal. I can't explain it!

I'm glad this is all you guys have to argue about :)

I can't think of any weird food preference here at the moment.

I'm assuming he likes the cupcake because its legal to hold them in your hand whereas with a slice of cake one is supposed to use a fork.
