Does anyone know the laws for a rentee involving a house that has NO smoke detectors?

We just rented a house and it didn't have any (we bought some... so no worries) but isn't it illegal to NOT have smoke detectors?Don't they need to be in the house? Aren't the landlords required to provide them?

i have tried to Google the laws, but come up with nothing... anyone have law citations?

So What Happened?

Land lord is having us buy and install and taking it off rent. Thanks gals! The law here says resident but only for construction after 1994. (our home is form the 1960's) The renter's insurance doesn't need a smoke detector the home owners insurance does, and after that was mentioned every block they has on not paying for them fell down.

Jany's response got me thinking. I would think that insurance companies would require them regardless of how old the house is, even if the law doesn't. If you don't have it already, you M. want to look into renter's insurance to cover your items in the event of a fire or other damage to the home. I would be skeptical of landlord's that don't provide items to protect the home, they M. not have insurance either.

I'm an insurance agent in AZ. I don't think the insurance company "requires" them or they don't pay, its more that you get a discount for having them. It is one of the questions on the insurance application. Regardless, why don't you ask the landlords why they aren't in the home? Ask them if you can take the cost of them off your rent. You have them now so I would just address it directly with them. Good luck.

I think it depends on how old the property is, some dont have to have them installed by law n some states. I'd buy a few and install them and just take them with you when you leave. In CA we have to have them and they have to work when the tenant moves in, but it's the tenants responsibility to maintain the alarm and keep the batteries changed.
