Having Problems with 2Yo Boy's Digestion

I have been having a hard time keeping my son regular. We have discovered that he might be allergic to bananas (they give him diarhea) but if I don't give them to him, he is constipated, even when we give him other fruit. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

aloe vera juice. My son has had digestive problems his whole life. (2 1/2 yrs) We had to take him to a pediatric gastroenterologist and they put him on medicines I hated because they gave him diarrhea and stomach aches. I found aloe vera juice on my own and tried it. It is the best! You just put a small amount in his water or other juice and it's great. They sell it at Walmart, target, and grocery stores by the digestive health or health food aisle.

Remember the P's: pears, plums, peaches, prunes, all the p fruits will help. Go for fresh fruit if you can, or frozen or canned fruit. Fruit juice has its own group of problems, so stay away from that if you can. Lots of water is also key. You might also want to try making some bran muffins (there is usually a recipe on the back of a Fiber One cereal box or other type cereals), or giving him raisin bran or fiber type cereals. My 2 and 1/2 year old goes through this from time to time and then I have to stop and think if I have been following my own advice, and realize I haven't and get back to it, and she gets back to normal. Good luck to you and him.

Here is an excerpt taken from www.drgreene.com:

"Bananas, rice, soy, and products made from white flour tend to produce firmer stools. Pears, peaches, plums, apricots, peas and prunes make stools softer. By balancing the diet, you can often keep the stools comfortably mid-range."

Hope that helps some. Good luck.

Your son may have "toddler diarrhea," which my son has. My son is allergic to apple juice, pear juice, grape juice, anything that has any combination of those in it. If he eats too many grapes he gets diarrhea, etc. A mom in one of my groups told me her pediatrician told her to give her own son a tablespoon of safflower oil. I haven't given my son any of those juices in months due to his diarrhea reaction, and recently have tried again with the safflower oil, and it's worked! You can give it to your son in something, or take it straight like my son does. I've been amazed at the results, and now I don't have to worry too much any more about whether or not someone gives him a juice he can't have. It's wonderful!

Hi S.,

This is a normal occurrence. Here are a few things that I can suggest to you. First, water is a must. This will help flush everything. Remember are bodies are 80% water. If you are doing juices then make sure they are 100% fruit juice and mix it ½ juices and ½ water. Most are really high in sugar and that is not healthily. Have him on a high fiber diet. This would be whole grain cereals and breads. The acid in the bananas are not good for his system right now so keep him off of them. Lastly, aloe is another good way to get his system up and running as will as a good multi vitamin. You can get both from me at www.herbalmom.com. Look under children’s health and digestive health.

Hope this helps and email me if you have questions.

If you want to really keep your son regular check out Arbonne International's fiber shake and herbal colon cleanse. Both are very gentle even for children. I know these 2 products have been life changing for me and many others that I know. In fact I loved them so much I signed up to get my products at a discount. You can ask me any questions you may have or you can check out Arbonne's website www.arbonne.com. Good luck!

I heard from someone that a banana sensitivity can also be a sign of celiac's ( a wheat/gluten intolernace- gluten is found in wheat, oats, barley, and rye) There is a celiac blood panel that can be done as a screening to see if your son is making antibodies against wheat. Constipation is one of the biggest symptoms of celiac's. My son is almost 6 and he had elevated antibodies against gluten on the celiac panel when he was 2. Celiac's seems to show up between 18 months and 3 years of age. He also was very sensitive to bananas. Just thought I would throw that out there as a possible thing. MAybe you can check online for signs and symptoms of celiac's and see if there are other symptoms that also fit your son. And of course the prunes does help with the constipation. I found a cherry essence prune that my son really likes. I think it is made by sunsweet...and we call them plums rather than prunes...infact I think that the label on the cherry essence ones actually say plums.

Hi*Ü*
when my kids had this problem, I was told to use prunes, boil them and they can eat them once warmed down or they can drink the juice itself, or make sure he drinks alot of water, and let him drink warm apple juice, in a few days he will be ok. hope this helps. it has worked for me and I have 4 kids, my youngest is 8 and she drinks alot of water, no soda, alot of fruit, and apples and loves apple juice, good luck

First of all, i hope to read about your graduation - you can do it. As far as the'regularity' of your little one, try applesauce - that worked/works for my daughter and she is 4 now. Try to remember what made little man fill his diaper and try those foods. good luck

Dear S.,

Well, the bananas are not the answer, so try prunes, I know that they have a bad name especially with younger people, but they work. I told my child that they were "candy fruit" and we had water with ice cubes so that he would drink more water, and they need water in their system to get the bowel movements working right.

Warm baths, but you do that anyway. Good luck, C. N.

If you think your son might have allergies then try taking things out of his diet for a week at a time and only one thing at a time, such as bananas, dairy, wheat, soy, etc. This way you will really be able to figure out which thing is causing the problem. You may want to consult your pediatrician before starting in on this project.
Applesauce and juice are great stool softeners.
What else does your son eat a lot? I would suggest keeping a journal of his meals and responses for a few weeks and that also might help you to find a pattern.

Try prunes to help keep him from being constipated. Gerber even has some juices that are mixed with prune juice in the baby aisle.

My 3 year old has the same problem and come to find out it is common with boys. Take him to his regular doctor and ask to be recommended to a GI (Gastro Intestinal) Doc. They will probably start him on Miralax which really helps my son. It's just a mixture for his drinks once daily. It' NOT a laxative. Also, I have found fibersure when cooking works and adds fiber to the whole families diet, and Sunkist makes orange flavor prunes which my son loves. Good luck!

Yeah banana's tend to make the kids constipated...I had the same problem with my daughter that is now 3. What my pediatrician suggested to me was either prunes or prune juice, I know that really helps alot. Also a lot of fiber helps to break down everything in his little body.

I hope this heps!

God bless. My sister lives in California is it hot down there right now? Boy you sound like you have your hands full going to school full time and being a mom. My siser is doing the same thing.

I had the same problem with my daughter who is now 3 years old. Instead of giving her bannanas I give her apple juice which is a natural laxative. It's been working so far and she loves apple juice.

Have you tried prunes or prune juice? You could even buy those little baby food packages of prunes and mix them in with his hot cereal in the morning. :)
