Having Periods Lasting More than 2 weeks...what Could It Be?

I had a baby last summer (my first) and was breastfeeding until just about a week ago. I started getting my period Feb. of this year. I've gotten it every month (except for March), and they have all lasted at least two weeks or more and have been very heavy. Before I got pregnant my periods would last about 5 days and have never been particularly heavy. I convinced myself that it was just my hormones adjusting but it's been going on so long and this month I actually started feeling very tired, weak, and have not had much of an appetite since I started my period. I can't even blow on my daughter's food to cool it down without feeling dizzy and light-headed. I am currently on day 13 and it is still fairly heavy. I do not really have any cramping, but it's very uncomfortable and I'm getting worried because of how it's making me feel lately. I am planning on seeing a doctor, but have just recently moved and still need to find a new doctor in my new city (too far to go to my old doctor). Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Has anyone else had similar problems? Thank you in advance for any/all responses.

Hi there,

I had a similar issue after my giving birth- I felt like I was going into labor again every month! I was going to a very talented acupuncturist and she worked on getting my female cycle back into equilibrium. I'm not sure about the availability of acupuncturists in Visalia, but please consider it- it's not quakery. I'm a scientist with a PhD in chemistry and can vouch for the quality of eastern medicine!

Best,
Erika

You really need to see a doctor about this. I do think you are anemic, who would be if they had heavy bleeding for 2+weeks... The only time I had long periods was when I was on the birth control shot. For 3 months I was on my period, not heavy and some days nothing, but within the next couple of days I would be bleeding or spotting. Needless to say, I only took one shot and I was done with that...I know as mothers we sometimes forget to take care of ourself because we are so busy. But take time, find a doctor and see her!
Hope nothing is serious!

Hm, I agree with Dawn, sounds like anemia.
Are you on any Birth Control? That exact thing happened when I had the Mirena, and it caused me to be anemic.
Other than that, I don't really know other than talking to a doctor. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. And good luck!

Good luck in finding a new doctor. When I had periods like this, it was related to fibroids.

It's not all that unusual to have a period lasting 14 days, but a "normal" 14-day period would be a day or two of heavier bleeding, followed by light to spotty bleeding for the remainder. You are dizzy, tired and lethargic because you are anemic from the loss of iron. Get to the doctor immediately --- even a "temporary" doctor would be better than none. There is a physical reason for prolonged bleeding. And, with the tiredness and dizziness thrown in --- you wouldn't want to pass out in front of your little one, would you? It could happen. Get to the doctor and please let us know the outcome.
