I am looking for a "high risk" OB in the area, and Dr. Russell Laros came up. Wondering if anyone here has had any experience with him? Positive, or negative, please let me know. Also, if you delivered at UCSF, what was your experience like there?

Thanks so much!

I had a high risk pregnancy and delivered April 2008. I had gestational diabetes and saw Dr. Aaron Caughey and Dr. Susan Tran. They are both wonderful!

This is a teaching school, so you'll have to deal with more people - students & residents wanting to learn! My resident (they call him the "chief") tried to convince me to speed up my delivery so he could show his intern how to break my water before the end of his shift. But my nurse encouraged me to stand up to him if I was not comfortable following his advice - which I did. My water broke naturally shortly after his shift! And everyone on the next shift were very patient with me.

Overall, I had a great experience. The nurses & my primary docs made it so!!

I used to work at UCSF as a Perinatal nurse. Dr. Laros is just about as great as they come. Not only has he been practicing for decades (he's very bright, and has top-notch clinical/surgical skills), but he's calm in chaotic situations, gentle, kind and funny-- hard to find these days. I don't know how easy it is to get in to see him, but in my opinion, he's one of the best OBs out there.

As far as delivering at UC goes, they have a rep for being high-tech, high-intervention (which is not totally untrue)-- most teaching hospitals in large metro areas are. Though, they do have Midwives on staff, so this tends to balance things a little. Also, quite a few RNs are supportive of 'low intervention' births, if that's important to you. If you have any sort of high risk status, it's the place to be (in terms of maternal and NICU care).

Hope this helps...

hi
Just take into account, UCSF is a teaching school...... I used to go there as a teenager and even then, it felt like they were kinda intrusive.. Went up once for an annual gyn visit and the nurse or doc asked if they could bring in "others" I said I prefer NOT.. this is a very personal matter and I don't want everyone viewing my private parts.. the nurse got real snotty with me and suggested I had an attitude. I Stuck to my guns though and afterward, never went back.. Teaching school is one thing, but if a person says no, it doesn't mean they have an attitude... If it happened today, I'd have reported that nurse to her superiors.. RUDE..

I would highly recommend Dr. Laros! He is a kind and caring professional, and very, very experienced. He's seen it all and doesn't get unnecessarily nervous about anything, which is an important trait to look for when you're going for a VBAC. There are a couple other providers at UCSF I would avoid, but if you meet them you will know immediately; otherwise the whole UCSF team is great, including the midwives and Dr. Robertson.

I saw Dr. Laros about 3 years ago after having some issues. He was great and I believe the reason we have two beautiful children now is because of his diganosis and course of action. He was not my OB so I can't say anything about his experience there but he is very knowlegable. One thing is that he is older and I believe only works part-time. I would definately recommend him.
