Did you give her to nose to show her how silly it is? Have her try it on? Put it on the teddy bear? Dolly? Herself? Then you. Tell her how silly it is and make a joke of how silly you can make various things.
Yesterday I stopped at a costume and purchased a witches black hat and a nose for myself. Now my 4 yr old is really scared of mask so I thought just getting a gross nose would really be ok. Especially since the rest of my face is exactly the same. She went completely hysterical!! So I had to give my oldest son the nose. I am one of the homeroom moms for my 6 1/2 yrs and I am reading some Halloween books on Friday. I was going to wear this UGH. I really had no idea she would of reacted so severely over a rubber nose.

That's okay... I distinctly remember being 4 years old and being picked up from daycare by a woman I strongly suspected MIGHT be my mum.
She had cut her waist length blond silky hair to jaw length and done the 80's poofy thing with it.
It took me 2 days to really be sure it was my mum and not someone pretending to be her.
((I never let her know this... btw... until AFTER I was sure she was really my mum. I just followed her around and did what she said very very cautiously. After all, she might be a crazy person.))
Very normal b/c she is a little young to understand the concept of costumes. To her, your face looks distorted and she doesn't understand why!
Just wear the hat and all black. If you have a long black scarf add that too!
Try letting her put it on herself in front of a mirror and then let her put it on you...
Reminds me of the time my daughter said she wanted to dress up as a witch for Halloween. She must have been 5 or 6. So, I put together a little outfit, buy some costume make-up and I do her face. When she looked in the mirror she absolutely freaked! It was very funny.
.
Not my own, but I have known a few in my 60-some years. My mom can even get totally freaked out by my husband when he cackles in a Halloweenish way.
There are children who by personality are open to change and stimulated by new experiences. There are children who are the opposite. (Some researchers believe this is one of the character variations that makes some of us "liberal" and some of us "conservative," and helps explain why it can be so difficult to understand those whose preferences are different from our own.)
I've heard of children who "freak out" when daddy shaves a beard or a mustache. So I guess this would fall under the same catagory.
I get it, it's freaky. I hate any kind of gross-skin mask. Just wear the hat, and do your makeup really pretty with lots of glitter, and be a good witch. :) Your daughter will probably like that.
My daughter got upset when I put on a "puppy mask" which is really only floppy ears and a nose on a headband. She freaked out for years. Finally, this year, she likes it...but now my DS is terrified. Sheesh..
UGH...I know how you feel. My daughter went through the same phase. I actually think this is a phase. There's really no explanation.
She wasn't looking at the rest of your face.
She only saw the NOSE.
Poor kid.
I think your nose and hat will be OK for the bigger kids.
But DD needs some reassurance that you are still same-ol-mommy.
