Have You Ever Mixed Starfruit and Persimmons???

I was introducing my 12 yo daughter to some exotic fruits that I love and have eaten before. Yesterday we chose a starfruit and ate one piece each. She wasn't thrilled, so I sliced a persimmon...the next thing you know our mouths not only tasted rubbery and hairy, but so did our teeth, tongue and felt like it was closing up my throat. I tried not to freak out in front of my daughter, and we both washed out our mouths with water thoroughly and brushed our teeths. Our mouths still felt hairy, and sticky, so we sucked on a lollipop to help our salivary glands secrete more saliva. Needless to say, it was very scarey. This was the first time my daughter had both, and I've eaten starfruit and persimmons before, but never in combination. I'm not asking anyone else to try it, but please let me know if someone knows what kind of chemical reaction happened here. I've been googling and can't find any answers. Thank you

Addendum: My husband is a top-notch ER and family practice certified MD, and had never heard of it before. The sad part was that he was cooped up in bed with a fever and a bad cold, and I was traumatized thinking that all of us are on the brink of not breathing at the moment. I guess being married to him kept us calm in situations like this. I even cut two pieces up and put them together to see if it acted like superglue (the way it felt), and looked to see if the fruit discolored, but nothing happened. I couldn't see much goings on in my daughters mouth b/c she had braces. But if you hear of anything, let me know....PLEASE DO NOT TRY IT!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your quick reply, Krystal!! I've googled it and------------in the colonial days unriped Persimmons were used for burns as an astrignent, it was also described as puckery when it shrinks body tissue!! OMG! I'm sooo glad for this forum! Now I know to wait for persimmons to ripe from Publix, or wait till my Mom and Dad give them to me from the garden ;) Yes, it's been traumatic, but now I know! BTW, our pomegranite is waiting a bit for now. THANK YOU LADIES (and Gents)!! I love this forum! Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi E.. I have never mixed starfruit and persimmons. However, I do remember this piece of advice from an older gentleman who ran a produce mart where I shopped. He did not mention starfruit, as at the time, they were relatively uncommon. I do remember him saying, though, that you had to be very careful that persimmons were completely ripe. Otherwise, they have an effect that is almost like having lockjaw! I never experienced it myself, but it sounds like what happened to you is what he was telling me. Hope you both are fine now!

E.,
You have just experienced eating an unripe persimmon is all. Had that pleasure a few years ago myself, lol. Persimmons become very close to a mushy state when ripe. I had eaten them most of my life till picking one from a tree in Little Rock while hiking. That was the worst taste to experience and to get rid of I have ever dealt with. Once you eat an unripe one you will always check to make sure they are. If they feel slightly mushy with the skin on they are ripe. But even now I take a VERY small piece to make sure. That is a natural reaction whne eating one before its ripe, so do not panic! hugs to you both, L.

persimmons will do that all by themselves if they are not ripe enough. that is what i think was wrong. but look it up on google.or ask your doctor if you can mix them.

I almost did this myself--we got some persimmons in our produce delivery and I have never had one before--So I googled them to find out what do to with them. Mine were hard and I read and the Hachiya kind (which is what I had and you too from the sounds of it) needs to feel like a water balloon before it's ripe--otherwise the tannins are very high and can be used as an astringent.
You description alone makes me not want to try this for myself!
The Fuyugaki or Fuyu kind (which is probably what you thought you had)can be eaten earlier and is not used as an astringent.

not sure about a reaction betweeen the two but I do know that a persimmon alone will do that to you when it is not ripe. The men in my family all hunt and this is a rite of passage joke that everyone must go through. If you have eaten persimmons before, you know they are good when ripe. When even slightly under-ripe they will dry your mouth out completely and produce all of the symptoms you have described. Not to worry, it goes away eventually with no negative side effects...

I never tried it before but oh my your story LITERALLY gives me chills. I bet you both were so traumatized... Sorry that happened. I spoke to a nurse and she eats persimmons. She understood the decription very well and she says sounds like the persimmon was not quite ripe enough she says they have to be very ripe and squishy. you cannot eat them if they have any green on them or you will get that sensation. she says it feels very sticky and you can't get it off. make sure those persimmons are extra ripe. sorry about that. It makes me afraid to eat them again. OOOOOOHHH!!!

I've had star fruit before and have experienced that "dry mouth" sensation before. I've never tried persimmon, however.

Hi E.,

www.foodreference.com says

"Star fruit originated in Southeast Asia and is readily available in Taiwan. Star fruit causes several symptoms in patients with chronic renal failure or end-stage renal disease. The symptoms vary and include insomnia, intractable hiccups, agitation, muscle weakness, confusion, consciousness disturbances of various degrees, seizures, and cardiorespiratory arrest. The various star fruit subspecies contain different toxins, including a POWERFUL NEUROTOXIN that is suspected to accumulate in blood, cross the blood-brain barrier in chronic renal failure patients, and eventually cause irreversible damage.
Star fruit intoxication is a neglected but serious fruit intoxication frequently observed in patients with chronic renal failure. Because no effective treatment is currently available, patients— especially those who are newly diagnosed with chronic renal failure or end-stage renal disease—must be warned not to ingest star fruit, even in small amounts."

I realize that what you asked is not directly related to this but thought I'd throw it out there if someone decides they'll experiment with exotic fruit!!!
