I really depends. I work in two hotels, both a franchise for Marriott. At one property, which is a category 3, nothing special/over the top, when we get Priceline guests, I usually find that the guest ends up paying only a couple of dollars less than rack rate, which really frustrates me b/c I personally could have given them a much sweeter deal without the headache of the "third party" reservations. However, at the other property, I am sometimes blown away at the deals people get!!! At a category 4 with a restaurant, Rack rate could be 119$ per night, but the guest tells me they paid $25 on Priceline!!!!! Of course what Priceline pays us is only about $17 for the room, but that's how they make their $$$ right? It really depends on what property you are looking at, b/c hotels set their own price on Priceline. The GM at my category 3 sets it at only $10 below rack, while the GM at my category 4 work will pretty much give away the hotel as long as we sell those rooms! Most of our guests end up happy with what theyve gotten, the only exception I've run into was people not getting the bed type they reqested, but that can usually be fixed if you call the hotel and ask us directly. If it's available, the hotel will probably make sure you get the right room type.
