Hello all

Can I use tamato in baby's food? My nephew is about 7 months old. I am gonna cook some pasta and don't know if my sister has ever tried giving tamato before. Some people say tamato is exclusive in their first year. Is it true?

What can I do next?

As someone with a daughter with food allergies, I don't feed someone else's kid anything without talking to the mom first, since I don't want anyone feeding my daughter. However, I gave my daughter baby food with a tomato base at 8 months and she did just fine. I've never heard no tomatoes the first year, but other posters are right, they are very acidic and I've known kids to have reactions to tomatoes (rash on face).

There are no longer any restrictions on what foods a baby can have in their first year (recently changed policy by the American Academy of Pediatrics).

However, the 2 rules they recommend following now are:
1. Don't give any foods that may be a choking hazard based upon their ability to chew.
2. Be cautious with foods that are known allergens WITHIN your family.

I never heard that one, and all four of mine survived tomato in the first year. I know I was careful not to let them have the skin of tomato until they could chew it up, around 18 months.

I agree that there are really no off limits foods for babies anymore besides safety issues (honey, choking hazards) but I would check with your sister before giving him anything new. My son has a sensitivity to tomatoes- gets a red face, and he used to get diaper rash from them because of the acidity. I would not want anyone giving my baby something to eat without checking with me first. If he gets diaper rash, she might get upset with you.

I never gave my babies tomato until they were well over a year (maybe even closer to 1 1/2 or 2) because tomatos tended to give them a rash. Every child may be different in that respect though. That was just how it was for us.

I'd say don't try it if only for the reason the it's really messy.
just giving him some plan pasta with some cheese sprinkled on it he'll prob use his fingers and eat it like that.

I would say the biggest reason you shouldn't feed a young one tomato, is because it is very harsh on the skin when it comes out the other end. I'm sure tomatoes are fine to eat, but be sure to change there diaper as soon as they poop. And keep a lot of cream on their butt.

Tomatoes are very acidic - he might not be able to tolerate it well enough. However all babies are very, very different. My youngest could not have any type of red sauce in it when he was that age because he would have loose stools for a few days later. However, my oldest loved it and his body took it well. But I started out very easy on it. If you make it separate from your batch, try to just add a teaspoon for now and see how he does. If you're giving him what you serve yourself, just try a very little bit and see how he does. If he has a bad reaction to it you will be able to tell the first couple hours after he's eaten it.

Gerber put tomatoes in some of its baby food that is for 6mo and up, so I would assume it's ok. I'd double check with the pediatrician. Like with any new food, try a little for a few days and see if there's a reaction, if not, he's probably ok

I don't think tomatos, oj or anything acidic is recommended for children under 1 year of age. If it's sauce, I recommend doing oil and cheese instead or if it's a 'must' (not sure why it would be), then just put a little bit of sauce over it.
