Haunted by Epidural Six Months Later!

I gave birth to my third child six months ago, and still have back pain from my epidural. My anesthesiologist had a heck of a time getting it just right, having hit a vein and practically sending his patient and her heart rate all the way up to the hospital's heliport, but I was assured all was well (and holy cow, did it serve its purpose!). I was pretty sore the week following labor and delivery, but chalked it up to the whole hot mess labor and delivery could be considered; I also thought it'd be a memory in a matter of weeks.

I'm still haunted by the stinkin' thing, having pain on a daily basis. It's nothing that I'd consider debilitating; however, it's annoying and a pain in the, uh, back. Anyone have a similar experience? What if I have another baby and call out for another shot of pain relief? (Yikes...)

What can I do next?

I had an issue with one of mine and after going to the DR he said well I am not finding anything I know you have seen a chiropractor, so why don't you see what he thinks. Well I had two adjustments and he put me on an exercise ball twice a day for about 6 weeks. The bad aches in my shoulders and the little twitches were gone after the first adjustment and the pain and added sensations that would come and go were gone after about 3 weeks. He also adjusted my new baby and we were off the expensive formula the peds dr had put us on for acid reflux. I would definately see someone. Congrats!

I have 2 kids and had the epidural with both, but it wasn't until my 2nd that I had a lot of problems with my sciatic nerve afterwards! People told me it was because of that but I really don't know what I would've done with out it! My son is now 2 1/2 and now I have it very occasionally, usually if I've worked my back a little too hard (lifting things etc.) I guess I would maybe ask a different doctor or anesthesiologist. Also, another thing to maybe consider is there could be something else that's wrong. With my first child I had gall stones so bad and didn't know it for almost 2 months! Until I went to the hospital because the pain was so bad! They only reason I got them, my doctor said, was because of the change in hormones etc, from being pregnant. And they didn't go away right away after my pregnancy! Hopefully you find some cure soon! It's hard raising kids when mommy doesn't feel well! Good luck.

Just wanted to chime in here and say yes, I think it's pretty common. Not that it should be, but...*shrug* I had an epidural with 2 of my 4 -- one went fine, after the other I had pain off and on for several months. Same as others have responded, it did seem to eventually go away on its own. Good luck! You probably should go have it checked out though, just in case its something else. Besides, at very least, maybe the doc could give you some pain meds?...

I'm not sure what I had with my c-section spinal or edidural one of the two. They had tried to poke me like 5 different times couldn't get it right either. I was about to flip out. I had nerve damage and could hardly walk for like 2mos.after surgery. I was in a wheel chair if we went to the store or anything. I saw a back specialist and had a MRI done, it was nerve damage. It slowly went away. My baby is now 13mos. and I'm fine. I never did anything for it, just took pain meds.

I had a rib go out of place during delivery, because the epidural relaxes all the muscles. I didn't know it until I finally went to the chiropractor for some relief.

Can you consult with a very experienced acupuncturist? I bet you would get pain relief from acupuncture. It usually takes me about 24 hours to feel the full benefits after each treatment. I get acupuncture specifically for pain relief in my leg, and I love it completely because it is so absolutely relaxing and non-invasive. Was it truly an anesthesiologist or was it a nurse-anesthetist who did the epidural for you? Sounds like they didn't get it right. I think that sounds like a bit of medical malpractice but why get letigious if you don't have to...I hope you are able to get the relief you need. There's nothing like constant pain! I hope you try acupuncture because it's done wonders for me.

You need to contact a physician and have it looked at. An epidural is a fairly standard procedure, but there are things that could go wrong. It's much better to have it looked at sooner rather than later and try to get the issue resolved before it gets worse.
Good luck!
