Has Anyone Used Thumb Guard?

my 8.5yo son STILL sucks his thumb - he's on the autism spectrum, so habits are much harder to break for him than for the average child. we are already looking at $$$$$$$$$$ in orthodontia as he gets older, and i REALLY want to stop this nasty habit. i'm all out of ideas, and this is all i've got left - so, just wondering if anyone has used it, and did it work?

edited to add: we've done the unpleasant taste things, the dentist and pediatrician have spoken with him, as have my husband and i - again, he's not the "average" 8yo, we're gonna have to make it physically impossible using some type of means less than cutting his thumb off :)

What can I do next?

Hi, J.!
I don't know what will help your son break his habit. I do know that a thumb guard didn't stop me. I was dealing with childhood trauma so it was more than simply a bad habit. I depended on it for soothing. My dad tried everything to get me to stop. So I learned how to hide it and only did it when I was by myself. My teeth survived and I did not end up needing correction. My heart goes out to you and your son. I hope you find a solution. Best wishes:)

I am going through the same issue with my 6 yr old. I have tried everything possible. I was researching the thumb guard and most people I have talked to said there kids chewed right through it. So I have opted out of spending that money. I think I am going to talk to our dentist on our next visit about getting that thing that attaches to the molars. My daughter only sucks her thumb while shes sleeping so I think this is my only option to grab her attention. Because even in your sleep you feel pain.

Good Luck and honestly, my friends son is autistic and he sucks his thumb, its a soothing thing for him.

Thumbguard worked for us! But my son only really needed it when he was asleep and wasn't aware of his sucking.

My mom told me (when I mentioned that my husband doesn't like the idea of letting our kids suck their thumbs for that very reason) that to break us (my brothers and I) of that habit when she decided it was time she put antiperspirant on whatever fingers/thumb we sucked on. It was something our pediatrician had recommended to her. I'd try researching that one online first, though. You could also try using jalapeno juice or something else very spice or bitter. Something that he would definitely NOT appreciate having the taste of in his mouth. I don't know if those kind of interventions would be appropriate for your son, but they're some ideas. Hope this helps!

I used it on my son when he was 5 and it worked but it took longer than 30 days. Plus we had to use it for nap time. He may still do it during his sleep but I don't think he even knows it. He is now 7.

I've heard mixed reviews about thumb guards and our daycare said they had seen multiple kids suck around them. So we tried the handaid.

Worked great! It's soft, so very difficult and uncomfortable to suck around. My daughter was a huge thumbsucker; we bought the handaid when she was 5 and she wore it for 6 weeks - problem solved. They are expensive, but very worth it. Daycare told me it was the first thumbguard they had seen that worked.

We used it, and it worked amazingly well. The thing is impossible to remove once you get the right settings on it, and I liked how it was easy to clean (unlike a lot of fabric ones out there!).

It did also take longer than 30 days, but all in all, it saved us from spending lots of money on ortho bills down the road.

Also I never heard of handaid, but I just checked it out and it looks expensive / scammy. I'd stay away from that one.

NOT WORTH THE MONEY!! I tried it with my daughter when she was 4... huge waste. She sucked on her other fingers, and I was out all that money. I was so disappointed :( BUT... last time we saw the dentist, he told her that if she didn't stop sucking her thumb, he was going to put 'this' in her mouth... 'this' being this medieval looking contraption that attaches to the back molars; you can still eat, but if you stick your finger in there, it pokes you, HARD!! Um, yeah, can't say that I've caught her sucking her thumb since THAT little threat, and she just turned 6 :)
