I need some advise on bed rails. We are moving my son into a big boy bed close to his two-year birthday. Does anyone know what brand or type of bed rail is best? And are there certain features that you would recommend? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!
My daughter went to a toddler bed at eight months, right about when she started walking. (she's a climber) We never used rails and she did just fine. She gets up and gets in bed with us at night, but no problems falling out or anything.
We did the same with my daughter at that age...we started by putting her crib mattress on the floor by itself and when she got used to that we put her big girl bed up. I have used a bed rail because she tosses and turns a lot. She has never fallen out of the bed but has fallen over the bed rail while playing. I do recommend the bed rails that you can flip down to make making the bed easier. The adjustable sizing helps too...I had to put my daughter in my bed for a couple of days and could adjust the rail to fit our bed as well.
When we moved both our chilren we put the bed in the corner of the room so one side was safe with the wall the other side we used a rail from Walmart that has a part that slides under the mattress and has a mess netting around the rails that lifts up and down for convenience. We never had a fall and they like looking at the patterns on the mess.
Our son used a toddler bed for 2weeks and never fell out. We thought our son was ready for a toddler bed after his 2nd
b-day. But when his sleeping went from about 12 hours each
night to only 6-7 hours, we realized he just wasn't ready for
a big boy bed yet. He's now back in this crib feeling safe
and secure. Just a little advise if this was to happen with

The rail we have is a Dex bedrail, $20 at Walmart. It is white and folds down for making up the bed, etc. It has been great! (I also like the swim noodle idea!)
hi my name is M. i use the bedrail from wal-mart for my son and he sleeps in a big boy bed. I put his in the middle of the bed it works. he doesn't fall off the bed.
Ditto on what Tonya S said. I think the brand name is First Years. One more thing - I went ahead and bought 2 of them and had 1 on each side. Good luck!
I am a grandmother of a 22 month old boy whose mother came up with a great idea. She moved him out of the nursery into a room with some of his toys and a mattress and box spring on the floor. He has a colorful comforter and soft animals to make it cozy. He loves it and she doesn't have to worry about him fallling.....too far. He is surrounded by pillows. She only puts him to bed when he is very sleepy and so far so good.
She is trying to get pregnant again and wanted him to be settled in his own room when the baby arrives.
There is no rule that says a toddler needs a bed.
We bought one like Tonya is describing. The brand is One Step Ahead. I get their catalogs, but I know they have a website too. Good luck.
My sons will be six in July and because they move around so much when they sleep they still have them on their bed. I went and looked and i couldnt find the name but mine are white with a mesh and a bar over the mesh area, they have two legs that fold out under the mattress and then a strap with a flat weight that goes under the mattress to the other side of the bed.
Mine also are hinged so you can fold it down, i never really used that feature they just climbed out of bed around it.
I should say though i skipped the toddler bed because i thought it was a waste of money I bought my boys twin beds and put the rails up.

We just converted our 2 year old son's crib into a daybed last week. Instead of using bed rails, we cut a swim noodle to fit the length of the matress and stuck it under the crib sheet along the edge of the bed. He can still get out of the bed easily when he wants to, but it has kept him from rolling out during naps and nights for the last week. Good luck!
We have a toddler bed for our son that is wood with wood bed rails attached to it. The rails start at the head of the bed & go about 1/3 of the way down. They work great for when he sleeps, but not for when he plays. He likes to jump onto his bed & always hits his legs on the rails. He has lots of bruises because of it. I would suggest rails that will fold down when you aren't using them. I think Target has them. Then you can unlock them & lay them down when he isn't sleeping in the bed. Plus I think it makes it easier to change the sheets without taking the bed rails off.
I put my 18mo old in the toddler bed without rails and he did just fine!
