Ok I am defintely into the whole camping thing more than my husband. We were all planning onn going this weekend together. We really need some wholesome family time. My mil fell and broke her hip and he is not sure what is going to happen. I believe he should stay with his mom. I already have the van completely packed and the are looking forward to it. Also we are able to visit her in the assited living but not in the hospital.

What can I do next?

My daughter and I go camping alone often, mainly because hubby is not huge on it. My daughter is only 5 so right now I have to do everything myself. I know that I can handle setting up the tent myself, watching my daughter, in charge/control of everything and still be happy... some would get frustrated, tired and crabby quick. So just judge on what you think you can handle.

Did it all the time. No problem. The kids learned how to help with everything. My second daughter is the real camper as is her son. We started when the oldest was 7 and have continued to this day.
Your children can help with everything. Have rules about sticking close and each one must wear a whistle so you can find them if they are lost. You wear one too.

My husband hates to camp, so I'm always the one to take them camping. We love it. My son is old enough now to help with the pitching of the tent, so that's nice! But it's SO cool to lay in the tent and listen to the night sounds and the water (we always camp near a creek). My children just love it and it is SO worth it to see their faces and hear their comments about it.

If you're not going too far from home, perhaps your husband can get his mom situated and join you for dinner around the campfire Saturday night. Sometimes my husband will do that, then leave when it's time for lights out.

Have fun!

Go camping.
I'm a single mom and I've gone camping with my kids by myself many times. I have a friend whose husband is a seasonal firefighter and gone during fire season. We've loaded up and taken the kids together.
It's fun!
I'm really sorry about your mother in law. My father in law broke his hip and he had to have a hip replacement and be in a rehab facility getting physical therapy and getting strong enough to go back home.
I agree that your husband should stay to be supportive of his mom.
Breaking a hip isn't any fun. Poor thing.
On a happy note, my father in law completely recovered and walked like a champ.
I think you should take the kids. For sure.
Summer's almost over.

Just my opinion.
Very best wishes for a speedy recovery for your mother in law.

My mom and aunt used to always take their kids camping without my dad and my uncle. We always had a blast, and our dads were happy to get some quiet time in their homes.

My daughter and I have camped together. We did go with friends so I had another set of adult hands to put up the tent. Now that I've done it a few times, I think my daughter (9) and I could manage even that on our own.

So, depend on the age of your children and what the camping conditions are, but I would encourage you to go.

OMG no...but my hubby is an Eagle Scout and I was born in New York City! LOL! So it would be the other way around...
Also our kids are 3 months old, 3 yrs old and 5 yrs old...so for me that would be a suicide mission!!
I guess it depends on you and on your kids' age, if they can be helpful for you :-) Maybe a mom friend can come at the last minute?

I love camping, but it's a ton of work to me and I don't know if I'd have the gumption to take my kids on my own. If you're into it, I say take them! You are woman... I hear you roarin'. Go Mama!

Not yet but I'm sure I will (once the 8 month old stops eating the grass, bark, dirt, rocks, etc.). Hope you enjoy yourselves ;)

Yes i went without my hubby. I do a lot of traveling (small trips ) without my hubby because he uses his vacation time to go on mission trips for our church and I believe traveling is very important for children. the more experiences a young child has the more their brains grow! We stay in camping cottages because I do not feel comfortable putting up a tent or pop up camper by myself I'm so NOT mechanical (make sure you can put the tent up, practice in yard if you haven't done it before) on our last trip there was a mom with two kids next to us. Be careful, be safe,Have fun!

Absolutely! As a matter of fact, we are going camping this afternoon when I get off work. Car is loaded and kids are over the moon excited to go! I am a single Mom so it's up to me to teach them this kind of stuff and they love it. As others have said, it can be kinda hard doing it all yourself, but well worth it. I don't know how old your kids are but they might be more help than you think. Also, you don't have to go all out. They don't care what they eat. PB&J would do just fine, as long as they get to eat it while camping.

Have fun and thoughts are with your MIL.

NO WAY WOULD I GO CAMPING ALONE WITH MY KIDS.

You could come across a strange man and what if he wanted to try something wrong against you and your children.

In my eyes It's tooooooo dangerous.

Yes - I have gone camping every summer for the past nine years without another adult. And it's heaven. Is it work? Yes. But, it's wonderful work and children are more than capable of helping you. It's so, so worth it. Children need to go camping.

Enjoy your camping trip and rest easy that your husband is doing what needs to be done for his mother.
Have fun!
