Has Anyone Taken Domperidone?

I have read online that taking Domperidone will increase your milk supply, and it is what most mothers who want to nurse their adopted child use. I have a 5 month old baby boy and my milk supply has recently decreased dramatically. I hardly make enough to keep up with him. I was getting 4-6 oz per pumping, but now I only get 1-2. Same pump, same amount of time. Thanks for any input!

What can I do next?

I took it and loved it! Didn't need to take it all the time but took it when I needed to increase my supply. No side effects and one less thing to worry about.

kellymom.com -- best site on the web for all things breastfeeding (talks about domperidone too)

also check out mothering.com/discussions (entire boards on breastfeeding and breastfeeding challenges). great site too.

hth & best wishes for you & your little one!

p.s. i've only heard good things about domperidone, but here's a personal-experience summary of (less expensive) things to do/eat/try: lots of water, fenugreek (at a dosage that makes you smell like maple syrup), oatmeal, SLEEP!, an occasional, well-timed guinness beer
things to avoid: REGLEN!, stress, caffeine, antihistamines, rapid weight loss, pacifier &/or early solids introduction (for the baby, duh) ;)

I have heard the same thing and Raglan works, too. Your Dr. will have to prescribe it. Mine wouldn't and I took Fenugreek capsules- 8 per day-(available at Whole Foods) to keep up my supply. Oatmeal also helps. Drink water, but not too much as it can decrease your supply if you drink too much. My lactation consultant told me. Good luck!

I took it, though it didn't help me. My best advice for you is to stop pumping and do 100% breastfeedings until your supply goes back to where it should be. Then, introduce a pumping session in addition to the normal feedings.
The pump is not as efficient at sucking as your baby!
Good luck,
A.

Hi K.,
It might not be that your milk supply has decreased, rather it may be your pump. I had to switch to a hospital grade pump around 6 months because I wasn't able to pump any milk at all with the one I had used originally. I don't recall the reason why this is, but I found the idea when doing some internet searching one night. I honsestly never thought it would make a difference, but the hospital grade pump was miraculous. I rented one for 6 months from Harris Hospital in downtown Ft Worth. http://www.texashealth.org/body.cfm?id=1820
It's a bit pricey but totally worth it if you want to keep breastfeeding. Good luck!

Do you have to pump or are you in a position to just nurse? The sucking demand from the baby should increase your supply and also letting him suck just for comfort rather than using a paci should help. Lots of water and oatmeal and sleep help immensely.

Assume you're already making sure you have plenty of water, to keep those arteries and veins hydrated? I have no experience with that one that sounds like the expensive champagne (Dom Perignon?) LOL! But back when I was nursing, they told us beer would increase the milk supply. If you drink beer anyway, that wouldn't be a hardship (but I didn't like beer!) Just a thought!

Hi,
I took it and I loved it. It was the last thing I tried to get my supply up and it was so easy. I should have tried it first! Here are the other things I tried when DS was a newborn: nurse every 2 hours for 48 hrs; nurse, then pump (takes way too much time!); a Lactaid with formula to supplement and encourage sucking at the breast. I did all this between 3-6 weeks. I know your DS is older so I do agree with the other posters about him being older, possibly eating solids, getting a better pump. I do not have experience with those things. But consider them. When I took domperidone, I noticed an immediate effect, that night really, at 3am, when moms make more milk. I was engorged. I took it for maybe 3 months? By then, I felt that my supply met DS's demand. Feel free to email me too.

I haven't taken Domperidone, however I have taken Fenugreek, a high quality version - 3 pills/3 times a day for 3 days then 2 pills/3 times a day for 3 days and that dramatically increased my supply from 1-2 each side to 5-6. I drank plenty of fluids and pumped every 3 hours (the down side). But once I had the supply re-established I decreased the # of pumpings and still kept a good supply.

Good luck!

Yes!!! I've been on it since my daughter was a few weeks old after having no such luck with fenugreek, mother's milk or any other natural stimulants. It has seriously worked wonders for us! I, personally, always felt empty and as though I wasn't able to pump off any extra. Once I started taking domperidone I saw a significant increase within maybe 2 days, and definitely within a week. My ob prescribed it for me as it's the preferred one over reglan. No side effects, nothing other than a great amount of milk. haha

I don't know what other, if any, questions you have but please feel free to message me if you want to know anything else. I'd be happy to answer anything else you may want to know. :)

I never took it, but have heard good things about it. You might check out a website called milkshare dot org. It has lots of women with tons of experience in getting their milk supply up. You'd get a lot of great feedback.

Call Kay at the Nesting Place in Grapevine. She's a great LC and should be able to help you. I don't know anything about taking this med, although Jack Newman talks a bit about it in his book (you could check that also). I had supply issues and the regimen that I was on at 4 months was: feed my daughter every 1-1.5 hours during the day and as often as she liked during the night (aiming for 10 times/day, I think). Then pump after each feeding. Then offer my daughter a bottle of pumped milk. (Sometimes I'd reverse that order, though, like at bedtime.) (My main issue was that SHE wasn't getting enough, in addition to not pumping enough.) I tried the fenugreek and it did not work for me (bad side effects, not enough good benefits.) Also, I added a protein shake (egg white protein, since we had milk sensitivity issues). You have to eat enough to make enough milk. I also increased my water intake, and that did help me, though I hear it doesn't work for everyone. I followed this regimen for a few weeks until everything got sorted out. I never added formula until she was 11 months, and that was only 4oz/day for one feeding. I breastfed till she was 14 months. I'm only giving you this info so that you have some other ideas until you can decide about taking the meds. My understanding is that you need to tel your body that it needs to make more--so pumping more is better, but after your little guy goes first. Also, making sure you have a good pump is important. I rented one from the hospital and it was pretty intense and definitely gets more milk.
Also, have you started adding rice cereal or other food? If your son isn't taking as much from you, it could be because he is getting calories from the food and isn't as hungry. If this is the case, I would cut that out completely also. I didn't add anything like that until at least 6.5 months, and it was a slow process.
Dr. Jack Newman is a leading breastfeeding doc (out of canada, I think) and you might check out what he has to say about domperidone. I think he might give dosing and whatnot in his book or online. Good luck! I hope it all works out for you.

I would not take a drug to increase your milk supply. You can do it naturally with Fenugreek or Ashwaganda.

If you need help locating quality herbs just let me know.

I was so tired about 2 months after my second that I just stopped eating and I woke up one morning with NO milk. I started taking fenugreek and continued to nurse and within a couple of days had more milk than she could ever want! You can buy it at most vitamin stores.

It's a compond drug and only certain pharmacies in the area carry it. I checked into it and it was going to run me about $100 a month for the drug. Ins does not cover it. My lactation consultant started me on Fenugreek and it's an OTC herb. It did wonders for my milk supply. I was able nurse for 12 months with out any problems but I had to stay on the fenugreek and drinking a minimum of 64 oz a day was also key for me.

Good luck.

I took it for a year and I think it really helped. I tried the herbs and accupuncture before switching to dom (at my Dr and LC's suggestion). Work with either or Dr or your LC to get the right dosage, etc. La Leche League was also a big help when it came to boosting my supply, so I would also recommend getting in contact with them. Good luck!!

Over time you just will not get as much when you pump as when you nurse.
If you want to increase your supply there are several things you can easily do.
Pump in addition to nursing not instead of.
Take fenugreek- this comes in capsule, liquid or tea form
Mother's milk tea from Traditional Medicinals
eat oatmeal
drink plenty of fluids
The fenugreek and tea can be found at health food stores and Central Market or Whole Foods.
