I have one and thankfully have never had to use it. I figure for such a low price, I might as well buy it. Check out the ResQME tool which is a window punch that works underwater, a seatbelt cutter and a keychain all in one. It's like $17 which is a small price to pay if you ever find yourself in that position.

Yes, get one.. My Stepmothers daughter died tragically in a horrible accident. She was alive in her car when it hydroplaned and then flipped over into a flooding creek. Her boyfriend and best friend were able to escape the car, but "C" drowned, begging to be helped out.. People tried using a tire iron a regular hammer, but nothing worked..

The fire dept later showed that the Life Hammer would have saved her life, in a demonstration about not driving over bridges prone to flooding (This was not the reason for her accident) we saw that it is the pressure on the inside and outside.. Also the car had electric windows, so none of that worked when wet..

I don'tt know abot them but thought I would put in what they showed on a program about a week ago. They talked about what happens when a car goes under water and did a number of experiments with a guy in the car with a waterproof camera and then the driver of the car. Now, the car was lowered into a pool-not accidently driven over a ramp or something. Of course, the "driver" was much calmer than we would be. BUT, they showed that if you wait until the water is equal in the car as well as outside-the water is at your chin or higher--you can open the car door with just a bit of a hard push. The a guy they had in there was pretty strong and tried like crazy to open the car door when the water started coming into the car at his feet and then at different levels. I think they did it 4 times. No matter how hard he pushed he could not get it opened. The main point they gave was that when you panic and tried getting that door open right away, you lose all your strength and then when the water is filling up the car you are worn out and cannot do much more. They were also able to open the back door so the camera man could get out when the water was equal. My son says it was MythBusters--I think on Discovery Channel (my son loves this stuff) but not quite sure of that. You might be able to google the show. My son also says they said that the little hammers that they sell for this purpose only work 25% of the time and the guys said if you have anything, there is something called "Safe Hammer" that works 85% of the tme. I think it is great to have something but also know this other part. I never would have guessed. I know I would totally freak but I think I would be able to remember to let the car fill first. I hope I never encounter or have to read about thishappening to anyone.

On Myth Busters they tested what you could really do in a car under water situation. They could not break the window by hand, foot or keys. They tested those tools made for the purpose (life hammer was one) and they instantly worked. On Man Vs Wild he also showed what to do and he suggested you take the headrest off and use that metal spike to smash the window and showed him doing it.
So, I'll use my headrest.

I am going to buy one after reading about the child who died in a car that went in the water. My 3 year old got locked in my Mom's car, my daughter was too feaked out to unbuckle herself from her car seat, the police said they could do nothing so we were left getting her out ourselves, my Mom has a Lexus sports car, it seemed like the glass was bullet proof, we hit the glas with a hammer over 18 tiimes before it broke. I was so upset there wasn't any other way in, it really freaked my daughter out for months, she still doesn't like the sound of hammers pounding. An hour later when the police showed up told me that was the only way to get her out. We tried other escape products we got at Costco, it didn't work at all, that is why we had to use the hammer. Thanks for asking this question, you reminded me to buy this hammer. Have a great day

Yes we bought one. I was more convinced after watching Mythbusters. They did an episode to see if they work because you really can't open a car door until the car is completely submerged and has equal pressure within the car as outside. And if you are drowning you don't want to have to wait. Just as the previous poster mentioned. After watching the show, I HAD to have one just in case. They tried 2 different types sold on the market and both worked. I don't think it matters what brand you get. It just needs a pressure point as those sold on the market. The one we bought also has a knife that will cut a seat belt. Cause if you are freaking out and can't get a seat belt loose I would rather know there was a knife there handy than not. They are not that expensive either. I've seen them at hardware stores like Home Depot and even Restoration Hardware among other places. I'm sure you can find them online too. And for my peice of mind I think they are worth having in any car.

I have one. I saw it at Eddie Bauer two Christmas seasons ago and I had to buy it. I've never seen one sold retail before that. It has the hammer, a seatbelt cutter and a flashlight on it. It looks very sturdy and comes with a plastic piece to mount it in your car.
I, Thank God, have never had to use it. (It is a comfort to have but terrifies me that I'd ever be in that situation.)
